after three to four weeks of doing simple line work, with an emphasis on negative space and proportion, we graduated to value drawing today.
this is the first valued charcoal drawing i've done in at least four years, and, for the first time in a long time, i'm pleased with what i've done.

last night bezdek and his friend ben walked in my house without letting me know beforehand. strange voices advancing beyond the primary threshold were a bit unexpected.
we ended up going to see some fireworks around 10. we sat on the east bank of harriet and were in position to watch 5 discrete shows.
around 1130, i got a call from logan. by 1210 i was with he, kevin, and co. fun, relaxed party at a friend of a friend's place.
sometime around 3, logan, andy, taylor, gus and i fired off a good $80 worth of mortars in marcy park. pardoning the pun, it was a blast.
after a few hours of rest i rolled over to the studio and did a few studies. a foreshortened guitar would end up getting explicit kudos from my instructor. i remain pretty pleased with it.
after i had listened to both danger doom and bjm disc 2, i drove home for a shower, a meal and a nap, not necessarily in that order.
in a recently-conscious state, i set off to class a good hour and a half early, which afforded me the luxury of walking around campus with some bjm, and a mango bubble tea. by the time class came around, i was particularly refreshed and ready to render.
since maybe 8 of 20 people showed up for class, we worked on the above piece in two shorter sessions, and called it quits a little after the half-period mark. in all, the last 25 hours have been good to me.
it was an odd experience to step back from my work today and be legitmately impressed. there are a ton of flaws in terms of the actual shapes and how they relate to the physical objects we were drawing from, but i remain satisfied with my drawing.
as a note, smearing crap around with your fingers is really rewarding. also, working reductively is fun, but less-so when you're using newsprint.
ps - a special thanks to grace, my enabler.
