South Africa v. Mexico

Jun 11, 2010 09:24

I can't believe the World Cup is finally here and the first match has been played. Due to the dreadful time difference, I was up by 5 am watching the opening ceremony. I can hardly think what I have to do on days where some games start at 4:30 am! Although I doubt I will wake up for a 4:30 am S.Korea-Greece or a Algeria-Slovenia game..they will be recorded though.

Match Reaction:

I have to say I'm very impressed and surprised by the way South Africa played. They are ranked in the 80-something? And Mexico is ranked 17th in the world. Both team played pretty good football, much like Spain's style, though not as technically accurate. Mexico dominated possession as expected, especially in the first half, but they didn't have too many good chances and was a bit unlucky. Overall I was impressed with South Africa's defense (except for the goal...they left a gap for Marquez) and goalkeeper. The keeper made some great saves from Dos Santos shots. Of the Mexican players, Dos Santos was the best for me. He was quick , kept the ball well, and made some great shots. I wonder why Barcelona let him go (or is it just loan?). In any case, it South Africa was lucky to not have conceded more, but also unlucky to have hit the bar towards the end of the game. At least they each got a point of it, and for some reason, I expect Uruguay and France to tie as well judging from the way France's been playing lately.

The France-Uruguay game is coming up in 2 hours!
