So I may have mentioned that there's something wrong with my computer at home. Well, you might all be wondering what, and why, and why I'm never online anymore it seems, except at work, when that used to be all I did at home. Joel's video card bit the dust... then his monitor quickly followed suit. We don't have the funds to fix his computer right now, so he's using mine. Something that one of us (I'm going to say me, but I really don't know) did caused there to be a yucky virus on there. Nothing that seems to do much, honestly, except keep me from logging into various websites: gmail, hotmail, anything google or msn really. I can't log in. So Joel uses it for his forums, and his MMORPG (the only one I'm letting him keep for now), and I basically ignore the computer. This week I'll be using it for photo manip stuff and such, but nothing more than google search and photoshop, so it shouldn't crash browsers on me.
Another thing that happens is that Explorer is KAPUT. Honest. If you open Explorer at all, it will open about a million popups. It's horrendous... The other browsers just crash whenever I try to log in to the above-mentioned places, but not Explorer, no...
When we get the time and money, we're going to probably have to burn everything off of there and reformat. For that, though, I'll need a new OS, as the one I currently have was 'given to me by a friend' when he built the computer. >.> Fun times. Well, we're hoping we won't have to do that, but that's looking more and more like it may be the case.
I really need to check into actually purchasing virus protection software. Right now, all we have are the free programs. I'm wondering if purchasing a paid program would actually help our odds in figuring out what's wrong and, you know, actually fixing it.
I was given a link to a website that provides reviews and such of internet firewalls, privacy and parental control software. It's really interesting researching into these things, and the interface is simple enough to keep from being complicated. For those of you with small children (and I know several who have children that are too old to be on the internet, but really, they'll be on there one day) they even offer information on
content filter software. It looks really useful, and if it's reasonably priced, I may just go with something like that for the time being, until the computer can be fixed. At least we could avoid the porn popups using explorer. ;-;
Meh. I suppose I'll see what happens. Wish us luck with the computer woes... but at least you know why I basically ignore the computer when I'm at home these days... you know, other than not having any time or life. ^_~
