On The Subject of Comics and Magazines

Every week, even if we don’t stay at the local comic book shop, we usually find our way there long enough to pick up the week’s release of comics. (Stupid me, however, is so behind that she could stop buying comics for a few months and still have stuff to read!) Joel has sworn off of Marvel since the whole Captain America thing. Between the two of us, we buy an amazingly small number of comics compared to what we used to buy (which totaled around $50 a month before).

The thing that usually bothers me is the fact that I do not know what is out. That is to say, if something isn’t on the shelf, I do not know it exists. I am an indie fan, and most of the comics I buy, thus, are rather obscure to most. They also tend to sell out rather quickly, which means I rarely have a complete run of a comic. I’m deeply considering setting up a pull box.

We also often forget to purchase the month’s issue of Dragon for Joel. This bothers me, as I know he greatly enjoys those magazines. A good amount of the time, the magazine is sold out, or we weren’t paying attention when it was released and missed a month. Today I figured, what the heck, maybe I can look up how much a subscription would be online.

I stumbled upon MagsDirect, which seems to be a fairly big magazine distributor at discounted prices. I flipped around, looking for the Gaming magazine in question, but they do not seem to provide subscriptions. Some of the things they did offer subscriptions to sidetracked me, though, and really caught my eye.

There’s a really interesting magazine called Cooking for 2 which I think would be a nice thing to have. I rarely make more than just for Joel and myself, so this would certainly be helpful. I wish there was more about the magazine, though, and maybe a ‘trial’ subscription for a month or two to see if I would like it. I’m afraid that most of what they would give recipes for would be things Joel wouldn’t eat, you know? Then, what’s the point of cooking for two, when only one would be eating?

The next thing that I found surprised me, because apparently you can subscribe to comic books as well, and have them delivered directly to your home. That caught me off guard, and I considered it in leiu of a pull box at the comic book shop, until I realized that the indie comics would never be big enough to get their own subscription based readership. XD

I also poked my nose around and found a writers’ magazine that had me grinning like a dork. I’ve heard of/seen the magazine a couple of times, but never really got around to subscribing or picking up an issue. I’ll admit, it’s tempting. Something I also found interesting about this website is that they actually gave a price comparison on the Writer’s Digest. I think that’s a really great thing to do. Not only do they show you that they’re one of the best prices out there on their magazines, but they admit that they sometimes are not the lowest price, and even link you to the person who is. That probably doesn’t help my temptation to pick up this magazine.

I’m trying to be good, though, and not subscribe to anything, since they don’t carry Dragon. I guess we’ll just have to keep more vigilant and make sure to purchase them every month, without missing an issue. At least now we have a solid wood bookcase that can handle the massive weight of magazines and D&D books. O.O

stuff, d&d
