So, okay, who's done it? Who wants to give me some advice, because now I've lost a bit of weight, and you know, I'm no longer a blimp that appears on radar screens, I'm putting myself out there

I don't actually have anything constructive to say, just that you have total balls. I tried an online dating site for, like, ten minutes a few years ago, started talking to this guy, freaked out, and shut down my account and hid in a corner.
Yes. You have balls.
That said, my little sister met her fiance online (ten years ago, no less), although that wasn't specifically a dating situation. Either way, it can work.
Fact: I'm 28 and still don't have any real interest in dating. Late bloomers are just having more fun being individuals before becoming a half.
I haven't used the dating sites, but I've had a number of long distance net based relationships. Even moved a few times!
It's hard, I tend to say go for the guy you think you want and spend time talking in emails, messenger or on the phone before you meet up. By time I mean a week or more.
Okay, I've tried online dating sites several times. The first few times ranged from "disastrous" (I faked falling asleep on my couch to get the guy to go home) to "meh" (just a bunch of boring, but nice guys). The last time, though, I thought, "Okay. No more waiting for someone to email me and then finding out he's just another boring person I don't really like. I'm going to contact each and every guy I come across tonight that looks like someone I'd like to get to know, regardless of whether I think he'd like me or not."
Because I, too, was a settler. Back before I lost weight, I was grateful for whatever male attention I got, and I thought that no way would anybody I'd be interested in want to date me. But this last time around, I think I contacted something like ten or fifteen guys, and I remember being vaguely disappointed that only two wrote back, and only one of those was an interesting response

You are definitely one of my success stories. Well, not my success stories, but you know, proof that it can work, because your guy sounds so awesome! I've emailed one or two guys and had some responses - one was a bit too eager to meet, which put me off a little (after one email, seriously?) but I guess it's better to meet sooner rather than later? I mean, not spending weeks and weeks emailing, because then you might not get in person and you've wasted all that time.
I just keep telling myself that even if nothing works out, it's an afternoon or evening out, it's meeting new people, it's an experience, it's not going to hurt, and hey, who knows, right? But yeah, I think you're right about not settling. It's not fair on anyone for me to feel that I've settled for them, like they're somehow second best.

This is what I've always said. I don't need to be in a relationship, but I wouldn't mind. For the regular sex, if nothing else. ::grins::
