Literal Videos

Not feeling too well the last few days. My mood isn't stable lately, and it's a bit weird. I'm having lots of food cravings, and I'm trying to just indulge, because I can't afford the anxiety of restrictions right now.  Mental health now, physical later. James would indulge too, right?

However, I have THREE DAYS OFF and I'm seeing a friend I haven't seen in ages. Thank god for midsummer, even if I don't even celebrate it. And - the sun is out today! Yay! It's been a couple of cold, gloomy days, but it's looking a bit better.

I'll try to be happy and calm tonight.

I'm sure everyone's seen this first one, but it's just BRILLIANT. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler.

This video reminded me of two things:
1. It's a pretty awesome (if slightly overlong) song;
2. The video makes NO SENSE AT ALL. There's wayy too much stuff going on. It must have been a really expensive video to make (so many actors and sets), but was it worth it?

It would be funny enough with just the observations, but there's an added bonus of reference jokes and commentary. I was laughing out loud throughout the video. The problem with this one is that it's so perfect, it sets the bar REALLY high.

Then we have Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That):

I'm not as fond of this song as I am of Total Eclipse. It's really over-dramatic and overlong, and the video is pretty ridiculous. The literal video is a great tool for mocking overdone concepts. I'll admit that an overdone concept is still better than no concept at all, though.

There are lots of fresh ideas here throughout, although I still prefer Total Eclipse. I think these two videos are a literal video maker's dream, since they're both very long and very silly.

"But it was all a dream - a creepy, mullet-headed, checkered-shirted dream."
That might just be my favorite line out of all of these lyrics. This is a very 80's video, and while there's less acting and sets to mock, the 80's fashions and painful-looking singing provides plenty of opportunities for gleeful mockery.

You know, I must admit I love the 80's (and in the case of Meat Loaf, early 90's). I mean, there's so much there to make fun of. I feel like it was a more innocent time, when people wore horrible clothes and had huge puffy hair. The world was safe and kind and full of plastic Goofy mugs and you could visit grandma anytime you wanted, because she was still alive. (I'm omitting the lack of internet, cold war and whatnot, but I'm allowed to be a little nostalgic because I was a child then.)

I realize my favorite literal videos are all by dascottjr. The weird thing is, after seeing Dusto McNeato's versions of Take On Me and White Wedding, I still like these ones better. McNeato came up with the idea, but I think dascott jr somehow upped it a notch - there's even more commentary, more references, and yet it's still literal somehow.

I've watched many a literal video at Youtube, and of course, a lot of them just aren't that funny. I feel like some people haven't really gotten the gist of the idea. A literal video is not really the same as a parody; it's supposed to be a commentary on the video, not a mockfest about the singer; it's not supposed to be a loose set of jokes on any topic that happen to amuse the uploader. It can't be too literal either; it's not enough to just keep saying stuff like "I'm walking down the road" and "cut to a woman's face". That gets old really fast.

I'm trying to make literal lyrics to a truly laughable Finnish 80's music video. I don't have recording equipment, though, so I won't be able to actually make a literal video. But I could, uh... write the lyrics on here and embed the video? :D Maybe that's a bit lame. I'll only do it if I'm REALLY happy with my lyrics.

nostalgia, stuff i laughed at today
