I finally got to finish watching Gun X Sword!
It had humor, some sniffly moments, awesome mecha (known as Armor), the angst-y hero, bad ass chicks, and some sibling rivalry.
Throughout the 26 episodes, the action remained pretty steady. Van (who is known by many names such as Van the Freeloader, Nice Guy Van, Hangover Van, Steel Van, and Van of the Dawn which is his favorite) is your typical protagonist. He has quirks like putting condiments, "all of them" as he often requests, on his meals and his low tolerance for alcohol. He's wandering the world to find and kill The Claw - the man with an artificial claw-like hand that killed his wife on their wedding day. To fulfill his vow of vengeance, he lets nothing stop him and turns from a calm, lackadaisical nature to crazed and obsessed upon hearing anything about The Claw. He fights using his Armor, Dann of Thursday, or simply called Dann - one of the Original Seven armors (each one has a name associated with a day of the week and they all orbit the planet).
During his quest he meets Wendy whose brother was kidnapped by The Claw. She joins him - even though he's not happy with the idea at first - and they set out together to find the same man. Of course, no story is ever that simple and along the way other characters are introduced and Van finds himself surrounded by more comrades than he ever thought he would. Although some of the plot was a bit cliche (hey, it happens everywhere) I think that the way the story was told was pretty intriguing. Some of the supporting characters weren't as annoying as I've seen in other shows. And of the antagonists, Fasalina probably takes the cake.
There are twists along the way and there's enough character development to make them seem more realistic, enough to create a sense of attachment between some of them and the viewer. I particularly ended up being a little fond of Ray with the way he changed (yet remained much the same). The ending was pretty sound overall and I thought it was satisfactory.
If you like mecha anime, then give it a go. Just don't let the first couple of episodes fool you, once you get to the heart of it, I think it'll be well worth it.
