Well, if this week is any indication, the 112th Congress won't leave me short of people to call asshats. And when I say "people," I'm stretching the definition to include Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina. DeMint, who is noteworthy for hating everyone and everything not capable of writing six figure campaign checks, is the Senate's point man for defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which includes PBS and NPR.
Confronted with Representatives supporting PBS, along with the creators of much of the children's broadcasting and people dressed as popular characters such as Arthur the Aardvark, DeMint derided what he called "the Muppet lobby," and stated that "these characters shouldn't be used in politics." I'm forced to ask why not, since politics are what's threatening the continued existence of these characters. DeMint believes that the shows will do just fine without PBS, and that the CPB is too expensive. I say why take the risk over one-thirtieth of one percent of the federal budget. It costs less to fund PBS for 10 years than to build one stealth bomber.
But DeMint doesn't care. And he derides those who do care as, "the Muppet lobby." I got news for you, Senator, you're not half the man those puppets are. Jim Henson's Muppets have education children and brought joy into the lives of people of all ages for three generations. Your entire career in public service has been able self-aggrandizement and putting the needs of the haves ahead of those of the have-nots. Not only do you have no right to mock the Muppets, you're not fit to clean their felt, you Asshat.
