Have you ever not been a jerk?

Got a confession to make. Had I not moved to Boston in 2000, I might have considered actually (seriously) running for Congress. That's because my old Congressman is Republican Peter King and in the run-ups to the 2002 and 2004 Elections, his was one of the loudest voices saying that disagreement with President Bush and the Iraq War was "Unamerican" and that people who disagreed were "traitors" and "enemies."

I bring this up because Congressman King is popping up in all sorts of fun ways over the last few days. For one thing, in the wake of the Giffords shooting, Congressman King introduced a law banning guns within a thousand yard radius of a congressperson. Oh, yeah. That would have helped. Preventing crazy people from buying guns would have had no effect but the armed nutbar would totally have stopped trying to get close to Congresswoman Gifford if the Neutral Zone was in place. I don't think so.

Congressman King has also become the head of the Homeland Security Commission, so he's going to hold hearings on "the radicalization of Islam." What these hearings are supposed to accomplish, besides gratifying Congressman King's dislike of nonwhites, I have no idea. He's not going to have hearings on any other kind of radicalization, even thought the DHS warned about it in 2008-2009. Cos, well, that's not important, nor is Congressman King's continued support for Irish Republican groups that are opposed to the Good Friday Peace Accords. So not only is he an asshat, he's not even a consistent one. So here's to Pete King, Today's Asshat. And I hope you do decide to run for Senate in 2012, and get your ass handed to you.

asshats, politics
