One more thing: In that same column, I wrote that "guns are cool." I got many sniffy notes from people saying that guns are emphatically not cool. This strikes me as willful blindness. One reason that guns are a problem is that they are cool. They look cool and they feel cool. People pretty much around the world like their guns.
