16 Unicorn St. Friday evening

John had been researching hard core for a while now, but had really gone at it since this past weekend and Sam's demonstration of his psychic abilities. It was slow slogging, but he felt like he was suddenly getting somewhere. The problem was to pursue the leads he'd dug up he was going to have go out on a Hunt -- an extended one.

He heard the front door open and looked up to see his eldest go down the hallway. "Dean," he called out.

Dean back tracked and stopped in the doorway to John's study. "Yeah?"

"Come in," John said, gesturing him forward. "I need to talk to you for a moment."

"Sure." Dean came in, looking curious. "What's up?"

John looked at his son for a long moment before speaking. "I need to take off for a while," he finally said. "I've got some leads on Yellow Eyes and I need to follow them before the trail gets cold again."

"Need help?" Dean asked immediately, and John was certain if he asked, Dean would drop all his plans and just go off with him. Boy was nothing if not loyal.

"Yeah," John said. "But not in the way you might think. I might be gone a while, depending on where the leads take me, and I'll feel a lot better if I know you're here looking out for the family. If you can do that for me?"

"Sure, Dad, of course," Dean said as if that wasn't the least bit in question. "You know I always do."

"I know, son," John said, smiling at him. "It's why I can leave without worrying too much, knowing you're going to be here, to help Zoe out."

Dean grinned. "She's probably enough to scare off most potential trouble and kick the ass of the ones she can't, with or without my help. But I'll be happy to watch."

John returned the grin. "Yeah, I wouldn't bet against her."

"So when are you leaving?"

"Probably tomorrow morning," John said. "Some of the stuff I've come up with is time sensitive and I don't want to miss my window. I'm hoping, if this all plays out, Yellow Eyes was be done and dusted and this whole thing will be over before Sam leaves for college."

"That would be awesome," Dean enthused. "One less thing hanging over the kid's head."

"Yeah," John said. He watched Dean get up and head for the door. "Dean?" he called out, making his son pause and look back over his shoulder. "I'm really glad you're here. Makes it a hell of a lot easier on me to leave and do what I have to do."

Dean smiled at him. "Any time, Dad. Family comes first. Always."

[ooc: played with saltandammo. Mostly establishy, but also open for anyone who wants to talk to John before he goes ahunting for the summer.]
