While John hadn't exactly been thrilled when Zoe had said she was going out to hunt, he hadn't been particularly worried about her either. His wife was definitely a woman who could take care of herself. He would have offered to go with her if they hadn't needed someone to stay with Grace.
But they did and they had a long standing agreement that they'd use rock/paper/scissors to decide who went out during these kind of things and who stayed with their daughter. And John had apparently thrown scissors one too many times.
He put Grace to bed and settled in his study with his research, seeing if there was something in his books and other resources that could help with the current situation. He got caught up in what he was doing and was surprised when he looked up and saw how late it was got.
Zoe hadn't come home.
John was up and peering out the front window, hoping he'd see her heading this way out of the fog, but no such luck.
Something was wrong, he could feel it in his bones. He wanted to get out there and search for Zoe, but he couldn't leave Grace alone.
Fuck. This wasn't good. Not good at all.
