Complaining About Shows I Don't Watch. Even Still? Dear Misogynistic Producer Dude: FUCK YOU.

I gave up on BBC's Merlin about halfway through the first season (or "series", you know, wtfever) because none of the characters were grabbing me, I didn't care for the story, and I thought it all just seemed kind of silly, in the kind of silly way where I'm not really interested in putting up with it ( Read more... )

fantasy, bad times, you make me sad, clusterfuck of rage, wtf, thoughts, girl power, doh, frustrations, oh snap, tv, sometimes i just hate people, i don't get you people, quotes, it's not bloody shakespeare, flames on the side of my face

I keep meaning to do a meta on "Misogyny in Merlin".

That said, I'm still watching Merlin though it's much more fun if you treat it as a parody now and play which movie we're riffing off today.

In season three
(1) all women are evil
(2) everyone who uses magic with the very rare exceptions of Merlin and people Merlin likes are evil
(3) women who use magic are especially evil as they use it to gain power that rightfully belongs to the white straight men

Morgause; Morgause is awesome. She's evil and sexy and a warrior - and if she were given her due (her mother was a queen) she'd have her own kingdoma and not be trying to put her half-sister on Camelot's throne. Morgause and Morgana even as half-sisters have the hottest chemistry on the entire show.

Third season did at least give us Gwaine and Cenred. Cenred and Morgause had a brief blaze of glory fucked up relationship of the kind I enjoy (hence my DeWitt/Dominic love); this is only important because none of the regular male characters do anything for me (though I appreciate Anthony Head)

Also last week, Uther tells Arthur that he won the kindgom rather than inherited it. Which makes his hissy fit this week even worse when Morgause takes Camelot by force; this is what he did, after all - and instates (minor spoiler) Morgana, who is still Uther's blood relative - on the throne, fulfilling the inheritance part of the deal. Suck it up, Uther. Why should Arthur get the throne when he can't hold onto it?

As a pagan and mythology aficionado and a woman I find the level of fail overwhelming, but the fannish love for Morgause and Morgana despite their treatment in the show very positive.

I've never actually been very big on Arthurian legend, personally. I mean, I've read it, I know the stories, but I didn't exactly enjoy it. Possibly that's why I couldn't get into the series. Because I tell you, if nothing else, the ladies are very pretty, and I especially love Morgana's dresses. But it takes a little more than that to keep me showing up.
