So Tangled was actually kind of awesome. If I had to choose which gave me better happy warm tinglies and fuzzies, between Princess And The Frog and this film, I would still have to choose the former. I don't know if it's just that I'm a snob in favor of the old-fashioned animation versus the new CGI stuff. But that having been said, Tangled still really was great.

There were a lot of fun little moments that really stood out, some great one-liners, and though they weren't entirely necessary (the story could've gone on just fine without the musical element) I did like the songs. Especially "Mother Knows Best". And speaking of, oof, that villain; not at the top of the scary or powerful meter as far as Disney baddies go if you're going to cross-compare, but within her story and context and what she achieved over and against the protagonists (especially Rapunzel, and especially emotionally) she was more than effective. Basically a lot of Ursula with a little Evil Queen and perhaps a dash of Maleficant thrown in.
The first 1/3 to 1/2 of the story was fun but not quite successful at sucking me in all the way. Pretty much everything up until the quarry scene, and then after that it got really awesome, poignant and adorable. I thought the animation worked really well and I liked the way it looked (my preference for non-CGI aside). I loved all the characters, the way they looked, the way they acted, the things they said. The romance was very Disney/fairy tale classic in that it felt just an eensy bit contrived and fast-moving...but it was still very acceptable and sweet, in that way where you go, "Oh, fuck logistics, just kiss!"

All in all, a very fun film, and one no Disney fan should let pass by.

lj, i think i actually need a disney tag, spoilers, cartoons, movie, meme
