I was watching music videos on Youtube, when I stumbled across
Irena's Theme by Giorgio Moroder from the film
Cat People. So naturally being me, I had to go watch the movie. It was... well it's hard to describe. For starters it's not a remake of the 40's film of the same name, at least not in any substantial way (it might have been sold to studio execs as one, maybe).
I don't want to describe the movie too much, because it would ruin it if I did. It's an atmospheric and emotional film filled with wonderful camera work - there's a lot of shots that were spectacularly constructed. There's a shot of Malcolm McDowell that has him naked in a bathroom. He rises from the floor and the camera moves to frame him in a mirror. I know, you're thinking "That's just to hide the dong" and you're right, it does that, but it also frames him as a caged animal. There's a couple of shots like that, using clever camera placement and the environment to expose the character's emotions.
The soundtrack is used to great effect, even the incidental music is chosen to fit the mood. The acting is also enjoyable from start to finish, which a lot of solid actors putting in good performances. The only thing I can really knock it for are the early 80's special effects, which while not terrible, do show their age a bit.
