Noooooo! Anything but the books!

Looking back at most recent posts, I forgot to include the most important one:

Somehow, on the way between Maryland and Michigan, the movers lost 15 of my boxes. These were all of my books! ALL of them! The boxes included other things like the documentation for my car, my medical records, my tax records, etc.

When they made the delivery, they would not let me check the inventory. At the end, the driver stuck a form under my nose and said "Sign here." He did not let me read the form. He did not give me a copy. He said "They'll send you a copy!" Yeah right.

The company maintains that, because I signed that form agreeing that the delivery was complete, they have no reason to look for my boxes. They did some cursory checking but found nothing, of course.

In the grand scheme of things, losing my documentation is more important than losing the books. But I don't care. They were the only things that, after my move, I could look at and say "These are mine." Which is stupid, but there it is.

Mom gave me a Kindle for Christmas, so I am starting to rebuild my collection. But an e-reader will never be the same. Life is a lot emptier now.

moving, books
