Just completed the slightly cumbersome process of web-converting the .CAF files of my Conterpoint set recorded on Lissa's iPod into a more PC-friendly format.  And then listened back ( Read more... )

Guitars tended to be (IMNSHO) mixed pretty low all weekend, actually, although direct sound may also not have helped

The guitars were mostly miked, which didn't help either, I think

Thinking some more, I suspect part of the problem is that without foldback I was pushing my voice to a volume appropriate to the sound I could hear from the guitar - and I have a quite loud guitar, especially when strummed. Which might contribute to the quantity of direct voice in the iPod mix, and would also explain why I'm hearing a need to be "gentler" in some of the vox.

Need to do some acoustic-only recording, I think, to hear how the voice/guitar balance normally sounds to others on either picked or strummed songs.

Trick is to make it a spur to improve rather than something that stops one bothering to try.

I know my songs wouldn't be half as good if I weren't such a harsh self-critic and perfectionist when writing them. Suspect the same is true for many other people.
