Yeah, you read that right. I found out today on facebook that there's a publisher in Indonesia that specializes in fanfics. I mean, WTF, man??

The latest fanfic they're going to publish is from Naruto fandom (btw, it's also available in ff.net but in bahasa). They had also previously published a Super Junior fanfiction. I don't even know what the ( Read more... )

Legally, it's pretty black and white. But when you think about doujinshi, which like fanfiction, is a fanwork, that black and white starts to blur. Fans buy fanart and other such goodies all the time as well, even those who decry the selling of fanfic. Now there's all sorts of grey area to contend with. It's something that has confounded me in all of my years in fandom, that the selling of visual fanworks seems generally accepted whereas the selling of written fanwork is an egregious and unforgivable event. I would never sell my fanfic because the very idea of doing so is abhorrent to me. But in terms of what we're demonizing, fair is fair.

If we're going to go after companies dumb enough to sell fanfiction (because really, wtf) then are we also going to go after all the conventions' artists alleys for allowing people to sell fanart? Doujinshi dealers? Not really quite sure where it should begin and end...

I'm also confused about this. We just feel that it's wrong because it's out of the norm in fanfic writing. I think it's more about ethical things than law...

*nods*

But fandom is one big ethical wtf because it's okay to sell doujinshi and fanart but not fanfiction. I'll never get it.
