Batman: RIP

Nov 28, 2008 21:25

Well...that was dull.

After hearing that it had made it onto BBC News online, I thought something crazily dramatic must have happened. Well, it did, but then again, it didn't.

So, Batman got exploded in a massive fireball. That is bad. However - the golden rule of fiction applies: if you don't see a body, they're not dead. And, tbh, in comic book land, even if you do see a body.

The most you can say is this: Dick's probably now in mourning. Actually, scratch that - Dick is a ridiculous optimist. He's probably thinking the same as me: "Bruce is alive, just missing. And meanwhile, Gotham needs a Batman, so here I am."

It's probably true that Bruce Wayne's good name has now been tarnished and that when he returns, one of two things has to happen: he has to clear his family's name, or he has to live a new life. That's not a big deal.

And Jezebel was definitely evil, not just an hallucination...and the Club of Heroes turns up, which was awesome...and the Joker managed to double-cross everyone, before Damian dumped him in the drink (clearly also not dead).

I suppose it did what it said on the tin - Bruce got whacked. But, really, meh - this is DC Comics. Every week someone dies and every week someone comes back. I'm too jaded to care.

The real question is - what do I buy? Nightwing's been cancelled, but I might continue buying Batman if Dick's in the cowl and Bruce is probably going to return.

Altogether, I'm underwhelmed, and seriously regretting buying all those tie-ins, that just contradict each other, and themselves, and make no sense.

review, comic
