Healthy Paranoia

They were seated in a circle, arranged around a plate of biscuits that they were staring at like a team of serious food critics. Steam was rising from the golden-brown biscuits, and the chocolate chips studding them were nearly the size of grapes.

Even Anzu was drooling at the sight, though she wiped her mouth when she saw how ridiculous the guys looked. "They seem okay," she whispered.

"They definitely pass the visual test." Yuugi reached for a biscuit.

"You're gonna do the taste test, then?" Honda said, and Yuugi stopped cold, then pulled back his hand.

"I brought my magnifying glass!" Jounouchi hissed. "Thirty times magnification - I'll see anything weird!" He snatched a biscuit and broke it in half on his knee.

"You're getting crumbs everywhere!" Anzu said, scandalised.

"This is important!"

"Shush!" Honda said, keeping his voice low. "Bakura will hear."

The four took a guilty glance at the kitchen, where Bakura was finishing up with the cream puffs. "He'll be back soon, hurry!" Yuugi whispered.

Jounouchi scrutinised the biscuit with utmost seriousness, his tongue sticking out in concentration as he broke it into smaller pieces. "Safe!" he said at last. "No glass shards or magic looking green bits or anything. Just chocolate biscuity goodn-"

"Quick, eat!" Yuugi said, diving for the plate. They stuffed biscuits into their faces just in time, because Bakura stepped out of the kitchen that minute.

"I'm glad you're enjoying them!" he said, only a small wince marring his grin when he saw the mess around Jounouchi. "Here are the creampuffs!"

They were round, huge, and golden, cream visible through the splits in some. Jounouchi, Honda, Yuugi and Anzu stared at them speechlessly, wondering how they could realistically hold off from simply devouring the pastries.

Yuugi closed his eyes - and the other Yuugi swallowed his mouthful of chocolate chip biscuit. "Thank you very much, Bakura," he said. "For making these treats, and for inviting us here to practise for Duellist Kingdom. It's good to be with friends at this time."

Bakura smiled. "It's no trouble, Yuugi! It's better if we're all together like this."

The other Yuugi nodded. "And to make this prefect, we need drinks to wash down all this rich food."

"Drinks!" Honda said triumphantly. "Yeah! I want - just plain water."

"Me too!" said Anzu.

"Yes, water sounds good," the other Yuugi confirmed.

"Water on ice!" Jounouchi said.

Bakura, slightly perplexed, headed back to the kitchen. "I'll be a minute," he said over his shoulder. "I'll need to dry a couple of glasses..."

"I'll help," Anzu said, and winked at the three staying in the living room.

"She'll keep him busy," Jounouchi said with relief, reaching for the magnifying glass he'd stuck in the inside pocket of his jacket. He took one of the creampuffs that had already split.

"And make sure the glasses don't get coated with anything," the other Yuugi said.

"Maybe we're being too paranoid," Jounouchi said, looking up. "Bakura did say that as long as he doesn't wear the Millennium Ring, it won't affect him."

Honda shrugged. The other Yuugi gave Jounouchi a look and said, "And maybe the other Bakura has arranged it so that if you eat the wrong biscuit you'll become that magnifying glass."

Jounouchi grimaced. "Right," he said, returning to his inspection.

It all seemed okay, and they were happily stuffing their faces when Anzu and Bakura returned. "You could have waited!" Anzu said. "We didn't take that long - I only spilled the water a couple of times!"

"So clumsy," Jounouchi said sagely, shaking his head, and winked at her when she gave him a soft smack upside the head.

"So?" said Bakura when they had settled down. "Do they pass inspection?"

They looked at him. Was that mockery? Were his eyes a little narrower, his hair wilder, his voice strangely different?

No, it was normal Bakura, smiling as he always did.

"They're nothing like we expected - but they're totally killer," Jounouchi said, grinning as if he'd made the best joke on Earth, and Bakura had no idea why the others groaned and Anzu gave him a much harder smack.

bakurae, fic, yu-gi-oh!
