Naruto 497-9: AAAWWW that's so adorable I could choke on it AAWWWW. The bit where the Yellow Flash + the Bloody Habenero = THE ORANGE HOKAGE! is the best, and also terrible, but mostly the best.

I did not expect to have reactions to those particular comics, though. But here's the required Katekyo Hitman Reborn! flail. It's proof that I've been intending to post a lot more than has been happening, because it's got all the bits-and-pieces of reaction posts that were lying around in text docs for weeks. Herewith a lot of capslock and inappropriate jokes re cartoon tragedy.

With regards to Enma's letter getting lost: "Oh no, a stupid misunderstanding and now we have to avoid speaking to each other and then break up" -- unfavourite trope! Such an unfavourite trope! AUGH. It's ... not done that badly here, though ... I GUESS. If your family thinks a guy's full of sin and that guy is in the mafia, it makes sense to be wary, even if he's got a really nice cat. It would still be SO EASY TO CLARIFY THIS ISSUE.

But it's not even Yamamoto's birthday! It can't be, right? If they reset the timeline after Millefiore Arc so that no one was gone from the present for long, then it ought to be November-ish and Yamamoto's birthday is in April, if I'm remembering right.
Seriously, this is all I can think, which is a testament to how effective the chapter is. Normally I'd be playing the world's tiniest violin as I gaze lovingly at Tsuna (as his angst is gonna go through the roof post this moment, hahaha). His refusal of the position of boss is polite, considered, and -- he actually admits to the positive effects the mafia's had on his life. I almost want to call OOC. But I can't, I'm too busy with that tiny violin after all. ♥

The 'birthday' thing is because I think it's a bit of a KHR joke that life is miserable on birthdays. According to the timeline from the Vongloa 77 character book, Gokudera got nailed by Chikusa and Mukuro, and Tsuna got dumped into the Varia ring battles because Xanxus found out about the fake Vongola rings.

Page 1 spread: HAHAHA AMANO TWISTS THE KNIFE. This is as bad as last chapter's "Enma waits. ALOOOOONE. BETRAYED." opening page. Aaww, look at Gokudera, actually looking like he believes Yamamoto is an okay type. The anime and to a lesser extent the manga has been freaking me out with regards to these two, because Gokudera has still been nothing but bitchy to Yamamoto, but omg they are really friends, I can be at peace. "Gokudera-kun's voice was shaking" -- damn.
Ooh! The Ninth is not as down with this refusal as he looks! I like that he's being more blatantly a bastard. And HAHA that Reborn is so indignant about his not beating Tsuna up.
His worry is ADORABLE. What would he do with Gokudera if there were no mafia? We could've found out and I would love if there were a line of questioning about 'what were you thinking, Tenth?! How could you refuse!', but it's okay if they're distracted. The distraction is pretty damn exciting.
My thoughts: oh poor Tsu--hey, that's a nice phone! Stylin'. I kind of can't take this situation seriously, on the whole. Yamamoto'll be fine, Tsuna, he's a main character.
♥! Reborn does not mess around. Tsuna and the rest can take care of the supportive part and he will check out the fresh crime scene. Even though he's so fond of Yamamoto! Forget about Tsuna and Xanxus, Reborn is the best boss.
CHROME'S THERE TOO <333 oh Gokudera, thanks for WAIT-- Kaoru's there too! The Simon are pretty cool. You sterling example of a bastard, Kaoru, standing there with no hint of nervousness. Adelheid must be proud. (Enma must be crying in a bucket somewhere. Just 'cos it's what he does.) I'm saddened that Shitt P. is on the bad guy side now. The others I'm fine with, but Lady Gaga :( Gokudera's cute friendship, down the drain!
"Yamamoto's dad is heading over too..." - This got me. That phonecall to Tsuyoshi must've been a killer.
...and then I imagined what the phonecall would be like...

I didn't expect him to maintain this level of anger. He's out for blood, look at him.
Oops, guess I can't keep going "it's just a flesh wound!" There must be nerves and bones involved. Not surprising, Kaoru did appear to stick a church steeple through Yamamoto's torso.
The middle bit is superawesome and creepy. Tsuna is SMILING in the next panel and he was on the verge of crying and killing someone on the previous page. Way to repress, boy, but good going under the circumstances.
Everything about illusionMoto is amazing. The way Amano introduced him by just standing him there even though that was obviously off; that Chrome gets to show her skills; the mist flames flowing into him in the above panel; and that everyone is going along with this creepy, mercenary, necessary plan. The vengeance aspect of this entire situation makes it a little weird to root for Our Heroes. Up to know they've been straightforwardly fighting homicidal maniacs for self-defence and/or saving others, but now they're on the hunt for somebody to hurt for harming one of their own. You don't know how that's going to end.
Allow me a moment for the Varia.

Why Mammon is suddenly big on Chrome (in the manga, anyway), I have no idea. Pragmatic enough to acknowledge that Chrome didn't have direct influence on the fact that Mukuro wanted to make Mammon a smear on the ground just a couple of weeks ago? With the resetting of the timeline, the ring matches was a short time prior to this. Maybe it's because the illusions are really impressive. The other theory is, Amano wants to make Mammon nicer and more moe before the reveal of female gender.
Kaoru's expression on being told Yamamoto's okay now makes me reconsider liking him. It looked like a "needs must" moment on the Simon side when Kaoru attacked, but now he's too smirky about the news, which is not happifying. Nooo, Kaoru.
You know, I never found Hibari all that hot, and then he popped up TYE in a suit. And somehow that was a very good thing.
I think there's a woman in the mafia!
HFFFFF FINAL PAGE I LOVE IT. When this spread opened the arc I freaked out to see Yamamoto next to Tsuna in the top part, because I was wondering if there would be *actual* rivalry for the right-hand position, but now it's heart-rending. No worries, Yamamoto, you'll be all right. This spread looked like it was just a character intro page/conceptualisation of the arc, and the fact that it's actually playing out in the storyline, with Tsuna so determined and all the guardians so capable, focused, and suspicious is so great.
