I've seen this meme around: list 100 of female characters you love. Which didn't seem to have much point - of course there are 100 female characters I like, it doesn't mean they're treated well in the source, or that there's much reason to like them. Some of these women are real assholes, or exist in canon for no other reason than to have drunken bubblegum and self-esteem issues.

But then I looked through a couple of meme-responses (they seem to dislike giving me real things to do at work*) and people had every female character on Angel except for Illyria! For a character who showed up in the last four-five episodes, I loved her so much I wasn't sure what had kept me watching Angel before she came. Is she even all that female? They use female pronouns and 'god-king' to refer to Illyria. But even if she was merely decanted into a female body and didn't do gender/sex, it's close enough. Being "decanted" seems like it happens to most of us, so to speak.

So, a list of 100 ... + characters I love, because the list that started this meme also didn't cut down properly, all female - and uh, beware spoilers for Terry Pratchett's Monstrous Regiment:

  1. Helen (The Homeward Bounders)
  2. Tibbles ... and Kathleen's not my favourite, but she was tough. Oh! Mrs Smith definitely! (Dogsbody)
  3. The sirens (O Brother Where Art Thou)
  4. Illyria (Angel: The Series)
  5. Kyoko (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)
  6. Chrome (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)
  7. Lal Mirch (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)
  8. Uni (Katekyo Hitman Reborn!)
  9. RIZZO. Ideally this would be handwritten really thickly and underlined lots and lots, but html will have to do. (Grease)
  10. Sandy Olsen (Grease)
  11. Frenchie (Grease)
  12. Flower-In-The-Night (Castle in the Air)
  13. Sophie. And Fanny and Martha and Lettie. (Howl's Moving Castle)

  15. Arukenimon, Yolei (Digimon 02)
  16. Jeri (Digimon Tamers)

  24. Kairi (Kingdom Hearts)
  25. Ariel (Disney)
  26. Mulan (Disney)
  27. Pocahontas (Disney)
  28. Lirael. The title character tries to kill herself in the first chapter ... I can only find this hilarious. She's strangely endearing for that alone. (The Old Kingdom series)

  30. Despair (The Sandman)
  31. Stacey & Amanda (Little Sister series)

  44. Grandma (Thunderstruck)
  45. She-Ra. She was leaping lava-filled chasms IN HIGH HEELS
  46. Pepper Ann & Nikki. You know what, I seem to recall Pepper Ann's mum was cool too. (Pepper Ann)
  47. Tom and Geoff's mums were also great! Even if I'm not sure if they have names... Probably they did, but it's been a long time since I've seen (Aquila)
  48. Trish and Lor (The Weekenders)
  49. Lust, and oh so very much Izumi, LAN FAN, and Winry. But WHY COULDN'T FATHER BRING LUST BACK TOO. :((( (Fullmetal Alchemist)

  52. Zelda & Chantal (The Sandman)
  53. Mahoja (D.Gray-man)
  54. Kisara (Yuugiou)
  55. Téa (Yuugiou, watch me blithely mix manga and dub anime ohoho. But I am fond of Téa as well as Anzu, which is a bit rare. She was the first character I liked at all.)
  56. Serenity (Yuugiou)
  57. Random Dent (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
  58. Fenchurch. AUGH WHAT IF SHE IS BACK IN THE NEW BOOK?? *COVETS* (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)

  60. Tara (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
  61. Stacey (Stickin' Around)
  62. Cassandra (Hercules: The Animated Series)
  63. Helen of Troy (Hercules: The Animated Series)

  69. Eowyn (The Lord of the Rings)
  70. Maria (Roswell)
  71. Aravis (Narnia)
  72. Lasaraleen. Okay she was foolish and frivolous, but she helped Aravis out nonetheless and I really, really liked the bit where they knew they'd never really understand each other, but were kind of fond of each other anyway and were friends. (Narnia)
  73. Hwin (Narnia)
  74. Jill (Narnia)
  75. Mary Jane Watson/Parker/Watson/GET OUT JOE QUESADA (Spider-Man)

  80. Shufti (Monstrous Regiment)
  81. Lofty (Monstrous Regiment)
  82. Tonker (Monstrous Regiment)

  84. Nanny Ogg (Discworld)
  85. Agnes Nitt / Perdita X Dream (Discworld)
  86. Eskarina Smith (Equal Rites)
  87. Lenalee (D.Gray-man)
  88. Terri Pickett & oh, Dru Hardly, the best and wisest geek Terri's brother ever jumped! (Gross Point. I might be the single person on earth to like these comics.)
  89. Grandmother (The Triplets of Bellville)
  90. Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins books. I loved the movie when I was little, but once I read the books it seemed so much better to have her as a minutely benevolent dictator than as the sweetest nanny of all.)
  91. Mary-Lou Finney (Absolutely Normal Chaos)
  92. Sedna (Inuit myth)
  93. Megan (But I'm a Cheerleader)
  94. Ann. Or "Annarchy", whichever. (Penny Arcade)
  95. Cal counts for some time and then doesn't ... I did like The Obscure Object a lot too, so. (Middlesex)
  96. The woman (Eros Turannos)
  97. Mother Yolanda (Black Lagoon)
  98. Lenina (Dalemark Quartet: Cart & Cwidder)
  99. Maria (The Sound of Music)
  100. Fatale. And Elphin. And Lily! (Soon I Will Be INVINCIBLE. Which doesn't really have to be written that way, but it seems so fitting.)

Yeah it is six on a Saturday morning. I can't sleep. *shakes tiny fist*

* Speaking of real things to do at work. One of the editors asked me how well I knew my alphabet. "The ABC?" I ask, stunned but willing to wait for the punchline, and she looks at me in confusion. Apparently she's truly not sure if I'm literate. Well. I'm hoping she was more confused by my incredulous and admittedly impolite tone, but she didn't sound all that joking, and she waited for a reply. People, please.
