Somebody's got some explaining to do...
I interrupt this evening to muse on something that occurred to me years ago in passing but that I only just now fully thought about:
FF9's Zidane is totally some AU counterpart to DBZ's Goku. I'm surprised there were no copyright issues that came up with this. Seriously.
When I saw the opening FMV to the game all those years ago, my first thought when I saw Zidane was, "Holy crap, Final Fantasy has Saiyans?!" And I laughed it off and didn't think of it further.
Until just now, for some reason, it occurred to me again. And then I started thinking about it, and there are a lot of freaking similarities.
To list off the top of my head, Zidane and Goku:
-both have/had tails
-both are blond (if only sometimes)
-both have a crazy-powerful transcended form (Trance; Super Saiyan)
-both are from another planet
-both are sent to their respective not-home planets as children to destroy them
-both end up with amnesia and forget that they're supposed to destroy said planets
-both grow up thinking said planets are where they're actually from
-both have a mentor (Baku; Roshi) that teaches them how to fight
-both have an older brother (Kuja; Raditz) that comes to the planet they're on with the intent to destroy it
-both are displeased with this idea
-both older brothers have no real sense of brotherly love and decide that if their younger brothers won't join them, they'll just have to die, too
-both die fighting their older brothers, but then are brought back to life*
*This is going by the assumption that Zidane and the others really did die fighting Kuja, went and fought Necron, and then they were revived. In which case,
-both retained their bodies and fought battles in the afterlife
-both their brothers ultimately end up dead
And now, back to your regularly scheduled browsing.
