Fandom Fun (Post the First)
As promised, here are icons and my first fanmix!! It's a Buffy fanmix, with one song for each canon ship (that I've seen, so, for instance, there's no Willow/Kennedy).

Also, I apologise if my fanmix is wrong in any way - I don't really know the conventions for this so I just did my own thing! Some of the artists featured are Muse, Sum 41 and Florence & The Machine. The songs are arranged chronologically in order of every ship's appearance on the show (so although technically Spike/Dru came way before any of these, they are fifth on the list because other ships were shown on the show before them). I've also included youtube links, so all of you can listen along. Enjoy!

I don't care that the film was silly, and the ship was never mentioned in the show - this will always be my favourite Buffy ship. I just love Pike and their journey as a couple - he thought she was just another shallow LA princess, and she proved him wrong.
I chose this song for the ship, because it kinda documents Buffy's journey in becoming The Slayer. In my mind, she's the Cinderella in the song, which is particularly great as it mentions a party dress, which is of course part of the iconic white ballgown/black leather jacket combo. And though she tries to hide from who she is ("looking for a nightgown"), eventually she accepts it ("everybody needs you"). In my mind, Pike narrates this (like he does in the Pike/Buffy Vegas story in the first omnibus). This isn't a particularly romantic song, which I think matches too, as although Pike was hopelessly in love with her, Buffy never really returned his feelings (though in the film she did, which I like).
For me, this is telling the story of Buffy discovering her legacy, with Pike there to help her and support her. Theirs is the doomed Dustland Fairytale.

In the series, this is arguably the first ship we see. It's Willow's unrequited love for Xander. (I've just realised I haven't included Xander/Buffy in this fanmix. I guess that's cos it's never really realised in the show, whereas this is.)
Basically, for me this song really expresses Willow's pining for Xander all those years, and stuck just being his best friend. Taylor's style really matches here, cos it's kinda young and light, not too heavy on the drama, but still with that sense of longing in the song. Although Xander/Cordy is still my otp, I'm kinda a sucker for this ship, cos I've been in Willow's position and I know just how unrequited love makes you feel! So I guess I should have included pictures of them just being friends and her just looking at him, but I used these, because they're kinda part of Willow's fantasy that could never be.

I chose this song because I think it really expresses the passion, longing and angst of Buffy/Angel. It is ultimately quite a sad song - the couple are made for each other ("my only one") but inevitably they must part ("so let me go"). For me, it tells the story of how Angel spent years watching over her before revealing himself, and how she lit up the world for him, gave him hope. And of course Buffy felt the same way. But the song is never really happy, the frequent minor chords give it a lot of angst, which of course their relationship is riddled with. And it tells the story of how Angel must leave, so that Buffy can live her own life, but he will always love and protect her ("I let go, but there's just no one like you"). And whatever happens, whoever they end up with, they will always be each other's.

I love this song for Giles and Jenny for so many reasons. FIrst of all, it's Simon and Garfunkel, so it's from the 70s and I imagine Giles listening to it (before he went all bad boy of course). Plus the song itself is briilliant - the melody is light and simple, with angsty undertones. Plus it's actually a really old folk song, which fits with Jenny's gypsy heritage. And in this version, Simon and Garfunkel mixed the lyrics in with hidden lyrics about fighting and war, which of course echoes Jenny's inevitable death, and the war they were constantly fighting with forces of darkness. I just the antithesis of this long - the beautiful melody and longing lyrics, mixed with the undertones of death. Plus it's written in the past tense, so for me this is Giles remembering Jenny and their love so cruelly taken away.

For me, this song is absolutely perfect for Spike and Dru. It's a brilliant song, expressing the pain and torture love can be, and how love can be the absolute worst thing for a couple. This song tells how they adore each other, drive each other crazy, and yet can't leave because they are addicted to the love, hate and pain of the relationship. Of couse inevitably Dru never loved Spike as much as he loved her, which I guess matches this song, as the woman's part (Rihanna's) is the shortest, so it's the male part that expresses most. This song also kinda fits Spike/Buffy, but I chose Spike/Dru because of the wonderful sadist/masochistic undertones, which of course is part of what kept Spike/Dru together. Plus the last lines of the last verse ("if she ever tries to fuckin' leave again") reminds me SO MUCH of Spike's line at the end of Lover's Walk - "I'll find her, tie her up and torture her until she likes me again". And the great thing is, that probably worked!

Ah, my OTP. This song matched with ship came from one of those perfect moments. I was driving (yes, thinking about Xander/Cordy) and this song came on the radio. It just seemed so perfect. For me, it perfectly expresses their conflict both in and out of the relationship ("what do you want from me?"). That question is just there constantly in the relationship - they're not quite sure why they're together, they drive each other crazy and they're a terribly perfect match, but they can't be without each other. And the chorus shows their love for each other, their desire to protect each other, and their loyalty. I love the line ("it's me, I'm a freak"), because that expresses Xander's fear in the relationship - he's a loser, they both know it, so a part of him can't believe that she would want to be with him. I can't really explain it any more - the song has the passion and angst of the relationship, with that question repeated. I can just imagine them saying it to each other during and after the relationship. I don't care what else comes along, this will always be my favourite ship because it was the most unexpected.

I am ashamed. Because it's such a crappy, comercialised, manufactured song but... but... it's good! And I don't know why, but it reminds me so much of Oz. So this is one part of Willow and Oz's relationship. It's the first months of discovery, when they were falling for each other, when everything they did was natural and spontaneous and right. What I particularly love in this song is the repeated phrase - "you know who are, and to me it's exciting", because this is true to how they saw each other. Oz immediately loved her because she was different from the other girls and he saw her potential and who she was. Willow loved him because everything he did was true to who he was and there was no pretention with him. And you know, cos he's Oz and he's awesome (yes, sorry, Oz has replaced Xander in my heart! As you may be able to tell...).

This song is just so beautiful and passionate, and again reminds me of another part of Willow/Oz, probably in season 4, when their love was so strong but of course there was that barrier. So for me this Willow begging Oz not to leave, and Oz begging Willow to take him back. It's the love and death of their relationship. I particularly love "what if you're making me all that I was meant to be", because I think that's so true. The effect they had on each other is so obvious . I mean, of course Willow's relationship with Tara changed her, but I think that relationship is more about Tara's growth than Willow's. Oz made Willow strong, supported her as she became more assertive, helped her confidence. Willow taught Oz so much about love and life, showed him that no matter who he was he wasn't alone. They made each other who they are. Which is perfectly summed up in Willow's words to Oz before he left for the last time: "I feel like some part of me will always be waiting for you. Like if I'm old and blue-haired and I turn the corner in Istanbul, and there you are. I won't be surprised... Because you're with me, you know?"
(Btw OMG that episode!!!! I honestly did NOT know how to feel! I was all sad and then that scene with Tara at the end... !!!!!! Sorry, fangirlish confusiony rant thing over now. Also - this is the OTP that crept up on me. As you can probably tell.)

Another kinda silly one here, but I love it. I chose this one for Faith/Buffy because it really reminds me of Bad Girls, the episode where the ship was just so damn obvious. For me, this song is about them just completely abandoning their boyfriends and other obligations and responsibilites to go to do just whatever the hell they want. Plus the video has that whole Thelma and Louise vibe, which is kinda fitting for Buffy/Faith. Basically, whever I listen to this song I just imagine the girls kicking serious arse together. And this is just SUCH an awesome ship, so it needs an awesome song!

I like this song for this (short lived) ship, because it's bright and the lyrics aren't about a relationship, they're about a moment of unity ("a simple meeting of the minds"), which is what Faith and Xander really is. And I feel the lyrics really reflect Faith's lonliness and personality at this point, how she's running ("from blazing arrows"), what sex means to her ("love was just another thing to add to your collection"). And what their relationship could have been - "you can show me what you've done, what your fears have been disguising". But of course for Faith it was just sex, and Xander didn't push their relationship. Ultimately, it was a blinding moment that I think helped them both, in one way or another.

I adore this song. And I know it may not be the best match for Xander/Anya, but for me this song reveals their devotion and love that's under the surface of the comic relief (kinda frustrated that that's all the ship's turning out to be, mostly anyway). For me this was really shown in the sex house episode (really cba to look up the name rn). When they were on the brink of breaking up, but they fought through it because they really loved each other. This song for me reveals the insecurity in both their lives ("through it all, I made my mistakes, I stumble and fall") but their love that brings them together and strengthens each other. They may not be the heroes of the story, but their love makes them heroes for each other.

Cos I know that if you read the lyrics this song doesn't seem to match Willow/Tara. But listen to the song, because the melody and instruments so match their love. It's so musical, powerful and beautiful. Magical. Which perfectly sums up their relationship. And the lyrics make sense to me - it's like for them the other is so bright that there's is the only light in the world, and their love bonded them together. So when the inevitable comes and tragedy strikes there will be no other light, no hope left in the world.

This has got to be one of my absolute favourite songs. And it just matches this ship so perfectly. For me it expresses Spike's longing and hatred and love for Buffy, desperate for her and yet hating himself for it. Plus the lyrics match - "dreaming I'm alive", "give me your heart and your soul". And it's got the carnal desire, the attraction they have for each other, and how bad it is for both of them. It's completely selfish on both sides ("give me your heart and your soul"). They want each other, they're obsessed with it, and they don't care what the consequences are.

Just buy this song. It is my favourite Zeppelin song, and for me just sums up the mission of the show, the destiny of the characters, the underlying battle between light and dark. Plus it's an absolutely epic song. I can't really describe it any more - you'll have to listen for yourselves. But trust me, you won't regret buying it. It's awesome.
