Summary:Changmin had never known memories could be so powerful, until he met Junsu.
“Abeoji, this is Junsu’s PET reading report,” Changmin put a file in front of his father, doctor Shim Seungho’s desk. The older man looked up with a questioning look.
“I think we really need to change the way we approach his case. I don’t think electroconvulsive treatment has done him anygood,” Changmin stood up, his hands held together.
“So what do you propose?”
“Traditional treatment, abeoji. Counselling. We have to revert back and do it the right way.”
“Changmin,” doctor Seungho took off his glasses, “You are a good, skilled doctor. However I simply can’t agree with you on this.”
“What, abeoji? Don’t tell me again it’s for political reason.” Changmin knew that his father and the Prime Minister had a good relationship and his father would probably help the PM to cover whatever secrets there were… His father was a Conservative, and he deemed Jung Jihoon a good Prime Minister. When he believed it would be for the “better good”, he would protect the PM’s reputation as much as he could.
But did that necessarily mean he should go against the principles of the medical profession and refuse to treat a patient the right way? When one had other people’s lives in his hands, one should put the responsibilities on top - that was what Changmin and any doctor had been taught all their lives. And if doctor Seungho betrayed that, Changmin would be so deeply disappointed.
The young doctor said all that to his father unreservedly. Besides the father and son relationship, they were colleagues and Changmin was using that privileged entittlement to confront his father.
“Changmin,” doctor Seungho calmly looked into his son’s eyes. Changmin saw in it not only the light of wisdom but also of upright morality. Doctor Seungho continued, “Do you really I would harm my patients? I advised the board to only go harder and not go back because going back to those basic treatments would not do Kim Junsu any good.”
“But abeoji,” Changmin didn’t understand the older one’s point, “If we don’t even know what’s causing him this way, how can we treat him? Kim Junsu didn’t have a history of autism. Something must have happened and we need to know it in order to treat him. We can’t just jump into aggressive treatment.”
Doctor Seungho didn’t say anything in return.
After a minute, it occurred to Changmin.
“Abeoji… you mean… You know what has caused it to Kim Junsu?”
Then the scene he had seen earlier in Junsu’s room came back to his mind. He shuddered involuntarily and before he knew it, he had let it slipped. “W… What was it, abeoji?”
Doctor Seungho quirked an eyebrow. His look let Changmin know he had said something he shouldn’t.
“Changmin, you’re going too far,” he said, “There’s a reason I don’t want him to be counselled. What is counseling? It’s to get the depressed to tell what has happened to them. What if telling would only harm and not do any good? What if you shouldn’t remind them of what has happened? Unless…” he paused for a while, “Unless you want to know things to satisfy your own curiosity, Changmin. In which case, I will have to put you off the case.”
“Abeoji, no…” Changmin protested. His cheeks flushed a little. His self-control had betrayed him. He had let it known he was interested in what he shouldn’t be.
“In fact, there’s already a request to change doctor coming from the patient’s family.”
“What?” Changmin felt cold blood run through his veins.
“You know what I’m talking about, do you not?”
Changmin totally did.
“Father, but it looked like that man was harming my patient.” He tried to regain his composure and explain it to his abeoji.
“Jung Yunho is Jung Jihoon’s son, that means he is Kim Junsu’s cousin. In fact they live under one roof.” Doctor Shim Seungho sat back on his chair. “Changmin, you are my only child and you have grown up without interacting much with any child from either side of our family. That, I admit is something I didn’t do so well in parenting you. Maybe that’s why you may mistake some interactions between siblings for unlikely conduct.”
“Father, no.” Changmin felt shocked and frustrated. He might be an only child but he knew siblings, or sibling-like people, would not do what Jung Yunho had done to Junsu the other day. Besides, something deeper than intuition, something that he couldn’t quite explain, just told him that it was just not right. How could his father say things like Changmin didn’t know a thing? Was he trying to mess up with Changmin’s judgment? He simply couldn’t believe it.
“No, father, it was not like that. How could you say it like that? I…”
And he knew he had been over-aggressive when his father cut him off. “Changmin, it seems really like you’re overstepping the border between a doctor and his patient,” doctor Seungho said sternly, “Though I know that is extremely hard to avoid... Ill people evoke sympathy from doctors in general, and we work in a field that directly involves matters of the mind and emotions. Nevertheless I have had higher expectations for you as a professional. Doctor Shim Changmin, from this moment you’re dismissed from Kim Junsu’s case.”
“What? Abeoji, no.” Changmin realized his father had called him “doctor Shim Changmin” and he knew he wouldn’t be able to change his father’s mind when his father treated him as any other doctor under his directorship. But he had to try. “Abeoji, but I don’t agree.” He knew his voice sounded too much like a whining child and it wasn’t doing any good but he couldn’t help it.
“Changmin,” his father’s voice became gentle again, “You’re leaving for France in a few months. You’re settling down with Victoria soon. The wedding is happening. I do this as a father too. I realize you don’t exactly suit a long-term case like this. You’re off. Now I have a meeting in 5 minutes, can you leave? ”
Changmin was speechless and he couldn’t move. He remembered having had to be pulled out by his father’s secretary, Seungyeon-ssi.
When he woke up from his trance, he saw a cryptic smile on her face.
When Changmin finished lunch and went back to his post, his colleagues were giving him weirdly gleeful looks. Then when he passed through the nurses’ station with his cup of coffee, he realized they were giggling after him.
He only knew what had happened when he went to Kyuhyun’s office in the imaging department later in the day, hoping to invade the bed in there for a nap. “Good job there, dude,” Kyuhyun patted his shoulder, while sighing dramatically, “But I’d have to say I’m sad to see you out of our bachelors’ club. Now there’s only me and Kibum. Our trio’s down to two.” He sang the last line like the meerkat in The Lion King.
“What are you talking about?” Changmin didn’t know what was happening. Kyuhyun was stationed in this office all day and even he was acting weirdly. What kind of news concerning Changmin was circulating around, really?
“But congratulations. Victoria is a good girl. Don’t know what she sees in you,” Kyuhyun teased.
“What are you talking about, really?”
“Aren’t you getting married soon? Heard it came out directly from the director’s mouth, that his precious son was getting married soon. Haha. But I mean, how much longer should you keep Victoria waiting anyway? It’s about time dude.”
“Wait, how…” Changmin couldn’t believe how gossippy this hospital was.
Right that moment, his phone rang. It was Victoria. She just called to ask how Changmin’s day was going, with a overly sweet and giggly voice.
What was this pointless call? Changmin stared at his phone.
Then Changmin realized, maybe the gossip had travelled across the buildings, towards the consulting firm down the street where Victoria worked. Now it was fun. Now Victoria believed they were really getting married soon.
Changmin rubbed his thick hair in frustration.
Not that Changmin didn’t love her… What he meant was, not that he couldn’t visualize himself sharing his life with her. Heck, he had even proposed to her, though not without some pressure from both families. It was just that…
He didn’t know. He didn’t think he was ready, that was why he had tried to postpone the wedding and keep it all as a secret from largely everyone outside his family. Not that he wasn’t sure about Victoria. It was that he wasn’t sure of himself.
He had a good reason for it.
“Here, it’s yours,” Kyuhyun handed Changmin an envelop. Changmin opened it, knowing what was inside.
The CT scan. Not of any patient, but of his own. The touched the part that reflected the temporal lobe of his brain on the film paper.
Kyuhyun looked over from over his coffee mug. He knew his friend was getting emotional again. “Don’t worry, I’m sure it will come back in time.” He consoled Changmin.
“I don’t know, Kyu,” Changmin sighed. "I don’t have any idea what had happened in those few years before the accident. I remembered what I learned in med school during those years but not a single person in it. What... if I had done something bad before? Was there anything or anyone I shouldn’t have forgotten?...” Changmin paused. “And then my parents shipped me off to the US to continue med school curriculum there. I didn’t get to reconstruct my memory when I still had the chance to…”
“Man, I assure you,” Kyuhyun pulled Changmin’s shoulder in, “You were a good chap. Diligent in med school. Top star. You didn’t have a girlfriend then so no worries about forgetting someone important, okay? You only met Victoria in the US. Your parents sent you off so you could recover without people interfering, trying to make you remember. That’s not good for you.”
Kyuhyun smiled. “Now come on, if you come for a nap then nap quick. Next patient up in 20 minutes.”

And yes, Hosu is the secondary relationship in this fic. I got all inspired when I saw this pic:
Ho holding Su's hand at the airport when Su was sick. Ain't that so damn sweet? TT_TT
