The fire crackled as Eleini rolled another log into the fire, she sat back down, leaning her back against the fallen tree trunk they had camped next to. She crossed her arms over her chest as she stared into the flames that licked at the wood. With the chill in the air as the late fall season started to set in, Eleini tried to keep her body warm with the thin fabric of her robes, knowing it would still be a couple of days until they made it to the next town.
“Here,” Alistair draped one of the heavier blankets on her shoulders as he stepped over the fallen tree to sit on her side.
Eleini smiled a thank you, tugging the blanket more around her, “You should be sleeping, your watch isn’t for a few hours.”
“I couldn’t catch a wink,” he chuckled and grabbed her stick she’d had been poking the fire with earlier. He nudged a few logs, causing the fire to crackle, more embers floating off into the night’s sky.
“This Blight scares me,” Alistair admitted, looking to her, and she could see the hesitation, the uncertainty in his gentle honey eyes.
Eleini turned a sadden gaze onto the fire, “As it does I,” she mumbled quietly.
They sat there, listening to the burning of the fire and the night as it continued on around them, while the others slept away in their tents.
“Do you think we can save Ferelden?” his voice was hushed when he spoke, causing a shiver to run down her spine.
Eleini huddled closer in the warmth of the blanket he’d brought her, pulling her knees to her chest like she did so often as a child, resting her chin on them, “Never loose hope, Alistair. If we loose hope…” she glanced at him, her face sorrowful, making his own look of uncertainty, “then we have already lost.”
Alistair watched her as she turned to face the fire, the two of them staying quiet from then on as they guarded over their fellow companions. Eleini scooted closer to his side, leaning her head on his shoulder as Alistair tugged her small bundled body tighter against him, pressing a soft kiss to the top of her head.
