iyfic_contest : #294 - Moving Target
--
Kagome settled into the grass, resting her herb basket beside her as she watched the children in the field play amongst themselves. She smiled softly, her eyes following Shippo’s bushy tails eagerly swaying as he bounded after his moving targets. One of the twins streaked across the field in a fit of giggles, holding her kimono up so she had the ability to run at full speed.
“Don’t get too dirty, your mother will be upset if you do,” Kagome called out, enjoying the chorus from the girls, full of obedience.
“Yes Aunt Kagome!”
Shippo broke out into a huge grin as the girls became distracted and he bounded after then on all fours. All Kagome could do was stifle her laughter behind her hand as they whined in happy protest, before starting another game of chase.
The swaying of the grass, brought her attention back to gathering medicinal herbs as she ran her fingers through the blades and plucking a stalk. Kagome examined it for bugs then placed it in the basket beside her.
“Old habits die hard.”
Kagome nodded, glancing upward, “That they do Inuyasha,” she gave him a tender smile, and patted the ground next to her, “Come. Join me.”
In his usual manor, he gave her a toothy grin, crossed his arms and dropped to the ground unceremoniously with a soft ‘thud’. Kagome reached over and gently touched his cheek, brushing her fingers softly across his skin before slipping them into his slivery front lock, enjoying the way his eyes slipped closed. Tugging on his hair as she guided his head into her lap, Kagome turned her gaze back to the children.
“Sango and the monk are expected in the next few days,” Kagome mumbled quietly, her fingers idly stroking the base of Inuyasha’s ears, as he settled into a content growl that rumbled through his chest, his claws flexing on the top of her knee. He scooted closer to her side, enjoying the warm and quiet peace that she offered him.
Kagome looked overhead, the clouds lazily floating across the sky, “Inuyasha?”
“Nn?”
“I might be pregnant,” she softly spoke after several minutes, her cheeks tinting pink as Inuyasha turned in her lap, gazing up at her with molten eyes.
“Kagome,” her name left his lips in a mere whisper.
She blushed more if possible, “I know we spoke about it before, and I’m sorry if this isn’t the right time…”
“Shut up!” Inuyasha sat up quickly, drawing Kagome into his lap. Kagome gasped in surprise at the hurried adjustment, her breath catching in her throat as Inuyasha’s mouth pressed firmly against hers, his claws burring into her hair, holding her head at the right angle. He deepened the kiss and Kagome found herself lost in the closeness of the two of them, focusing on solely him and the way he made her heart flutter in such a way she was surprised it still caused her great pleasure.
Kagome pulled back, inhaling a lungful of air as she stared at him, “Inuyasha?” she gasped, touching his cheek tenderly, watching as his molten eyes filled with unshed tears, “What’s wrong?” she trembled, hoping he wasn’t upset at her for breaking the news to him so soon.
“If you’re pregnant,” his face reddened, “then I’ll be a… father?”
She saw the visible fear before she felt it deep in her bones. And in that moment, she knew why he had been so angry the last few times they had talked about having children. But faced with the fact, she saw the want that he hid behind a golden stare.
She caressed his cheek and nodded, tears of her own brimming and falling down her rosy cheeks, “Yes, and you’ll be the best father.”
He gave her a hesitant smile, his hands trembling as he reached to caress her lower abdomen, “A piece of me-”
“A piece of us,” Kagome corrected, “And I know you’ll be there for our child. Just like you’re always there for Sango and Miroku’s children, Shippo even.” She swallowed a hard breath and leaned in and kissed his nose, reaching up to soothingly pet his ears. “You’re not alone in this, Inuyasha, we’ll work together.”
A few minutes of hesitation and quiet surrounded them as Inuyasha stared intently at her belly, his hand barely ghosting over her, before his ears swiveled forward and he lifted his gaze to meet hers, “Promise me one thing.”
“What is it Inuyasha?”
“This child-our child-will not be raised…” he paused, the words caught in his throat, his gaze growing distant.
She touched his face and smiled, “Our child will have a good life.”
Inuyasha swallowed, leaning in and kissing her passionately as he pulled her tightly against his chest. She knew him all too well, and he was glad to know that the unspoken words he had yet to find the voice for, she already knew. And she embraced them just as much as she did all of him. He had been lucky to have found her.
“I love you, K’gome,” he mumbled into her hair as he buried his nose into her dark tresses, inhaling deeply of her scent of wild flowers and rain, the smell calming him to the core.
She stroked his back and cradled him against her body as best as she could in the confines of his lap, “And I love you more,” she whispered, closing her eyes, and enjoyed the embrace, the distant sound of children’s laughter the only music to their ears.
