I just saw
Before Sunrise &
Before Sunset back to back.
Oh my... what wonderfully beautiful films. Of course, the first one is ten years old, but I hadn't seen it again in all this time, until now. And the second one is just gorgeous.
Richard Linklater is an amazing storyteller. His films are not for everyone, I'm sure, specially not for those who like action movies and unintellingent dialogues, and that's IF there are dialogues at all. But Linklater is all about words and character development. Jeez! I had goose bumps throughout both movies, specially the last one. Of course, I could relate a bit to the script, but that's another story entirely.
I remember seeing Linklater's
Waking Life a few years back, at a video rental place, and I saw the VHS carton and the cartoon art on it, and thought hey, this looks weird and somewhat obscure and interesting... and the film just blew my mind.
And then there's Tape, of course, and Dazed & Confused, and Slacker, and Suburbia, etc...
But Before Sunset.... man, what an ending. One of the best endings in cinema ever.
The one disturbing little thing, though, was seeing how ANCIENT Ethan Hawke looks. Man! I still remember the cute kid from Explorers, where I fell in love with him and River Phoenix! Whoa! Hard to believe it was 20 years ago. The guy is my age and he looks OOOOLLLLDDD. That was the one thing that distracted me from Before Sunset. That he looked like a dirty old man. Lay off the booze and drugs and cigs, man, please!
Anyway. I suck at being a film critic.
I'm going to bed.
Nite nite <3
