Wasted weekend

Really feel like I've achieved nothing this weekend! Yesterday I went as far as Aldi to look for an offer they'd had a couple of weeks back and today I went to Bikehut to pick up locks I'd reserved online. Of course they weren't at the Rutherglen store as arranged and I had to trek over to Paisley where they still didn't have the right one but gave

I love roast veg. The boyfriend isn't keen on it though so it'll be corn on the cob for us.

*On* the cob?
I'm so far behind the times.... The last I heard, corn *on* the cob was anathema to Brits/Europeans, and sweet corn cut off the cob wasn't much of an improvement. Seemed too much like "fodder for beasts of the field," is how we used to hear it was being viewed on your side of the pond.

So now you've got me curious: when did that change?

It's been regular fare as long as I can remember. Cans of Green Giant sweetcorn were always around when I was a kid and we had the 'real' stuff regularly too.

Mmm. I adore sweet corn. Always have, on the cob or off.
Field corn products are good, too. Corn bread, corn pone, hush puppies, hominy grits (I think those are done with field corn!), corn 'cakes' (griddle cakes made with a corn-meal batter), corn *fritters* (oh, there was *nothing* to beat my mother's corn fritters!).....

I may have to go *cook* something..... :D

That's something we don't really have. Other dishes made from it. We tend to eat it as is, just as a veg. Well some like the creamed stuff but I've never fancied it and I get the impression it's more common down south (where they go for things like mushy peas - which are not really eaten here)

But corn on the cob with some butter and lots of black pepper....yum :)

...and corn pudding and "spoon bread," which is actually a soufflee. If you ever attempt it, be forewarned that it falls---and it's not you: it's supposed to fall.

Corn on the cob is dee-lish with a good grade of extra virgin olive oil and a delicate sprinkling of salt (and black pepper to taste, of course) with sliced tomatoes fresh from the vine... Perfect for a summer's evening meal.
