Disclaimer: I just realized that I needed a better disclaimer. * deep breath * I do not own Law & Order Criminal Intent, I make no such claims to the wonderful works of Dick Wolf, whom I both love and despise at the same time. If I did own L&OCI, it would most definitely need to be on HBO or some similar channel. I do, however, own Travis Dane, who lives in my closet and fixes my computer. He's happy as long as I keep him stocked up with food and interactive leather and rubber bondage porno.
Note: How the hell could Danny put Elizabeth in that position? I needed an explanation, and since I couldn't find one in the episode, I wrote one. Or, at least I tried. It’s more of an apology, because I wanted one of those too.

He was smart enough to give her space, that Elizabeth would grant him.
That and not much else.
He had to ask, she knew that, she understood that much. If there was something that could interfere in the ability of his detectives to do their job, he had to know about it. So, it made sense that he would need to know whether or not Mark Ford Brady was Goren's father, or if Goren was just deluded in believing that, because if he was...
She didn't want to think of it. Goren may have gotten on her nerves more than half the time, but even she couldn't imagine that he could possibly be behind the murders of his brother, Nichole Wallace and the attempted murder of Declan Gage.
Danny had to think it. As Captain, he had to think of all possibilities, no matter now ludicrous.
She hadn't told him the result of the test, only that she had run it, and she realized that she probably should have just told him. If she had, he probably wouldn't have tried to get the information out of Goren the way he had.
Seriously.
Men. They never just ask.

He finally showed his face again a few days after Declan Gage was arrested.
He was waiting in her office, and Elizabeth could see that he looked like hell. She had heard that he had been in with the Chief of D's almost nonstop the past few days; he looked tired, eyes red and bloodshot, dark circles under his eyes, face pale. She felt bad for him, but the anger at what he had put her through was still there, so instead of hugging him, like she wanted to and she could see that he needed, she held back, arms crossed across her chest instead.
He saw what she was doing; he sighed and rubbed at his eye. “I guess I deserve that.” He muttered hoarsely, and she just nodded, not trusting herself to speak. He straightened up, and Elizabeth noticed that he was wearing the same clothes he had been a few days ago, the only difference being his tie. “Elizabeth, I'm sorry for putting you in that position. There's no excusing what I did.”
She sighed; suddenly she was tired too. She knew this wasn't the first time work had interfered with their relationship, and she knew it most definitely wouldn't be the last. She didn't work for him, he didn't work for her, but just working side by side would cause problems, and she had to know that. She did.
It didn't make it any easier.
“There is no excusing it.” She finally said, and the crestfallen look on Danny's face almost broke her heart. “But... We have to get over it. Both of us.”
“We-” From his expression, Elizabeth realized that Danny had expected to walk out of her office a single man, and she smiled wryly.
“We. You're not getting rid of me that easily.”
