I had a very awesome dream last night; It was Law & Order themed, sort of.
I was a naive twenty-something, fresh out of college. I had moved to Los Angeles( I think) in the hopes of finding my big break ( I was an aspiring actress). I was staying with a friend from my hometown, Bobby, his girlfriend Alex, and three of their friends, Mike, Megan and Jay. We were living at this weird condominiumish place, where most of the rooms were in one big lump, except for this little shackish sort of this off to the side, where we lived. Three bedrooms, a living room and a kitchenette. It was off the ground, so you had to take stairs to get up to it, and there was a sort of make-shift garage in the space under the house. It wasn't much, but it was better than anything I would have been able to find on my own, so I took Bobby up on his offer and moved in. Bobby kicked Jay to the couch in the living room and gave me the last bedroom, which didn't make Jay like me very much.
Mike was a tough guy, making his living by being hired out as 'security' to paying customers and by being a bouncer. Megan, his girlfriend was a waitress. Jay worked poker games, along with his partner, Frank( Who was Bobby's brother). Alex was a tough older lady, who was 'working the streets' as it were. Bobby didn't like it, but it paid the bills, which were high due to him paying off a lot of his brothers gambling debts and because of his mothers illness. Bobby counted cards with Jay and Frank ( Not something he liked to do, but again, he needed to pay the bills). I got a job tending bar at the same place Mike was a bouncer at.
There was a landlord, but it was a few weeks before I actually got to meet him.
It all started when Jay wasn't able to make his part of the rent; Instead of telling us, he decided to pay the landlord with counterfeit cash, the same stuff that he used in the clubs.Because Jay was always the one who took the money to the landlord, none of us noticed this, so we were all surprised when the landlord showed up, angry but restrained, saying that we had to pay him immediately or he was going to evict us all. Jay pissed the landlord off by repeatedly saying nothing was up with the rent, so he left, saying that we had a week to move out.
We were all royally pissed at Jay; Bobby was going to go apologize to the landlord himself, but Alex suggested that I should go talk to him instead, that he might look more favorably upon a distressed and apologetic young woman that the equally distressed and apologetic Bobby. There was a strange gleam in her eyes when she said it, and I knew what she was getting at, but I wasn't sure I'd be able to do that if it came to it.
I went anyway. I was new to the group, I wanted to show that I could pull my weight, so I went.
The dream then decided to skip ahead.
So a few months into the future I was in a relationship with... *drum roll* the landlord, whose name was Danny. My non-existent friendship with Jay was still strained; he now believed that I was getting off of paying the rent by sleeping with the landlord. He didn't like me, but he was getting along better with Danny, strangely.
Well enough, in fact, that Jay even invited Danny to go out with him, Frank and Bobby to the poker clubs that they frequent, to maybe get a piece of the action. Danny wasn't sure, but from my prompting and the promise of making some easy cash, he went along with them, and Alex, Mike, Megan and I settled into the shack for an evening of waiting, and babysitting Alex's son, Joey.
It was really late by the time the guys got back. I was nervous, so when I heard the car pull up, I stood and went to the kitchen, followed by Alex. I leaned against the wall and she sat at the kitchen table.
Danny came in first, sort of slamming the door open; he had an exhausted look on his face, which I figured was caused by Jay, who I could hear already even though he still down at the car, drunk and stoned out of his mind along with Frank. Bobby looked pissed, but I didn't see him for very long, as Alex brought him back to their bedroom. Mike and Megan went to drag Jay and Frank up to the house, leaving Danny and myself alone, at least for a few minutes.
He leaned his shoulder against the wall, facing me. He just looked at me for a few seconds, and then asked, " What do you want to do?"
" Be alone with you for awhile." I answered truthfully; he gave me a rueful half-smirk, and then grabbed me by the hand and led me outside. Instead of going to his place, like I thought we were going to, we headed towards the garage, where his black Corvette was parked. He gestures that I get into the passenger seat, so I do, and he gets in the front seat. He puts his hands on the steering wheel, leaned against it slightly and told me that Jay screwed up; he ripped off a big-time dealer for money and drugs, and today the four of them had been approached by the dealers thugs. He didn't say anything more about that specifically, but I could see a hastily stuck on bandage under his jawline. He then said that we had to get out of LA as soon as possible, because the dealers thugs would be back.
Danny initially wants to leave, just the two of us, but when I remind him of the fact that there's a kid inside...
We go back to the shack and rouse Bobby, Alex, Mike and Megan, quickly tell them of our plans, wake up Joey, and quickly get out of the house before Frank and Jay could wake up. We all get into Bobby and Alex's SUV, and drive off.
AS we pull onto the highway, Danny looks over at me, squeezes my hand and says, " We're going to be okay.'

I liked that dream. I hope it continues. The idea of dating Danny, even AU landlord maybe criminal Danny, was interesting. I left out a part or two, because those bits are.... precious. :)
