I Still Care [3/14]
Yesung/Ryeowook, a few ninjas
R | Romance, Drama
Life was never particularly kind to Ryeowook. If it meant indulging him in the riches, opportunies thrown at him, then he doesn't need that kindness. All he wanted is a friend, but it's much too hard to ask for.
Warnings: Mentions of drugs, weapons, some vulgar slips, insanely OOC

[YESUNG’S POV]
“Here.” Another short answer from Ryeowook as he passed me the note from Sungmin. Ryeowook quickly avoided my gaze and payed attention to the singing instructor.
“Thanks, Ryeowook.” I replied back. Ever since that hospital visit, he’s been avoiding me at all cost. Ignoring my gaze, giving me short answers, he doesn’t want anything to do with me. I guess that’s worth it though, that one day, I could finally see Ryeowook’s other side. The more caring, gentle side of him.
I opened Sungmin’s note.
Stop staring at Ryeowook. Even a blind person can see that you like him.
-Minnie
I gasped, how does he know? I looked at Sungmin to see him giving me a grin. He mouth out the name, ‘Ryeowook.’
I started to blush.
Ryeowook is a caring person; he just doesn’t want to let people know. He’s really cute when he’s laughing too. The only people he shows this ‘other side’ to are his grandparents.
That’s why I’m going to visit them today. They seem to know a lot about Ryeowook more than anyone does.
“Teukie hyung, can I go somewhere today?” I asked.
“Sure Yesung, there’s no training today, I think.” Leeteuk replied, looking at his watch.
“Thanks, hyung! I’m off now!” I said while getting my bag.
Leeteuk stopped me halfway in my track, “Yesung, where are you going?”
“I’m going to visit someone…in the hospital” I replied back. I don’t want anyone to know, but Leeteuk would probably want to know in case something happened.
“Who are you visiting? None of your relatives live here.” Leeteuk isn’t going to let me off now.
I sighed, “Hyung, please don’t tell anyone…”
“It depends, Yesung, just tell me who you’re visiting.”
“I’m going to visit Ryeowook’s grandparents in the hospital.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise.
“I want to get to know Ryeowook better, so I was thinking of getting to know his past.”
“Yesung, you’re going to be in so much trouble if Ryeowook finds out,” Leeteuk warned.
“I know…but I want to know more about him…”
“Okay, have fun and send my regards to his grandparents.”
“Thanks, Teukie hyung!”
I quickly flagged a taxi and gave instructions to the hospital.
I hesitated to knock on room 219. What am I going to say…? Then a picture of Ryeowook flashed in my mind. Whatever, as long as I know more about him…I don’t care if I look like an idiot.
I knocked on the door.
“Come in,” a faint voice greeted me in.
I slowly walked in and saw that only his grandma was here.
“Hello Miss…I’m one of Ryeowook’s friends…” I said, trying to find the right words.
Her expression got suspicious. “Ryeowook doesn’t have respectful friends like you. Who are you?”
How could she see through me so easily?
“I’m one of Ryeowook’s trainee friends, Yesung. I’m so sorry for lying to you.” I confessed.
“Hmm…Why are you here?”
“I’m here because…I want to know Ryeowook better…He doesn’t talk to any of us, he ignores us all. In short, he blocks us out…” I explained.
Her expression softened a bit. “How did you find me?”
“I usually follow him when he plans to sneak out, hopefully to stop him from getting in trouble. The other day, I saw him visiting you.” Wow, I sound like a stalker.
She finally smiled, “Come in, there’s a chair right here. “ She gestured for me to come forward. I did what I was told.
I replied, “Thank you so much!”
She began talking, “Ryeowook’s like this right now, but he wasn’t like that before.”
I was confused, “Before he was…different? More gentle and kind, like the day when he came to visit you?”
“Yes, he was like that before that happened. When he was 14, he had a friend. One of them pretended to like him for his money. When Ryeowook refused to give him money, he just went crazy. He said he only thought of him as a money machine and never thought of him as a friend. After a year, he refused to give his other friends money and most of them left him…they said the exact same things to him, only a few of his friends stayed. On top of that, his parents were never there to comfort him when that happened.”
I just stood there stunned; if that had happened to me…I don’t know what I would do. What would I become?
I finally found my voice to speak, “I see…I never knew so much had happened to him…” Imagine that most of your friends never liked you, but liked you for your money. Your parents were never there for you to talk to. No one cared for you.
“After that, Ryeowook changed…he believed that no one cared for him. He was left in the darkness for too long and no one came to even ask for his well being.”
“I care for Ryeowook though…”
“I can see that, following him every night…that must have touched him a lot. He would never show it though, he doesn’t want to let himself know that someone cares for him because then he would feel twice the pain if someone hurts him…again. He’s too fragile for that…” She trailed off.
I finally understood why he’s like this, “He doesn’t want to feel that pain again, so he would rather be alone.” Ryeowook’s actually very sensitive and he cares for others, but tries to hide it.
“Yes, that’s why he’s like this. The only times I see him happy is when he’s singing.”
“Ryeowook’s also happy when he visits you.”
“Ahh yes, ever since Ryeowook was little…we tried to be there for him. It’s kind of like substituting for his absent parents. Too bad right now I can’t do that…” She trailed off.
“You’ve done so much already, you shouldn’t say that.”
“Yesung, just keep your efforts and one day Ryeowook will recognize it. He will be touched and return to his normal self.”
“Yes, I will keep trying, even to the point that he hates me.” I want to see Ryeowook smile towards me, just once is enough.
“My grandson is so lucky to have someone like you always watching over him.”
“It’s no problem, really.”
“If Ryeowook treats you like this, then why do you like him?” She asked bluntly.
I was caught off by surprise, “Well…at first I was following him just to get him out of trouble…as a friend. Even though he looks heartless, he breaks off his meeting with random girls because he knows I wouldn’t leave unless he does. He doesn’t want the both of us to get in trouble. I slowly started to get interested in him, to see more of his good side. He really isn’t a bad person; he’s just a really good actor in front of us,” I rambled on.
His grandmother chuckled, “You’re one of the people that understands him well enough to see through his acting. Indeed Ryeowook is lucky to have you around. You have my full support.”
“Thank you, Ms….?” We’ve been talking for a while and I still don’t know her name yet.
“My name is Yunhee. Just call me Yunhee.”
“Thank you, Yunhee for all your help today!” I got up and bowed.
“Don’t say that, I should be thanking you for all the things you’ve done, plus you visited me today.”
“That’s all worth it if he really does change in the future.”
“I believe that you can make it happen. Now go or you’ll be late to wherever you’re going.”
“Okay, thanks so much. Also please don’t tell--“
“I know, don’t tell Ryeowook that you came today. My lips are sealed.”
I left the hospital afterwards to get back to the dormitory. It’s pretty late and I don’t want Teukie hyung to be worried.
Hopefully, what Yunhee said was right, that I can change Ryeowook or more like I can bring him back. I believe I can do it.
