Lydia slid into her usual booth at the diner, pulling out a copy of The Ladder, which she had painstakingly pasted the latest McCall’s cover onto. She took out her pencils, adjusted her cat-eye glasses, and got to work. A short time later, she looked up to find a strawberry milkshake in front of her. The pretty new brunette waitress smiled down at her. “You looked like you could use a pick me up.”
“Thank you,” Lydia looked at the name tag on the girl’s shirt. “Allison.” She smiled. I’m Lydia.”
“Well, you’re welcome, Lydia, I’ll let you get back to it,” Allison said, winking and making Lydia blush. Lydia allowed herself a second to follow the swish of Allison’s skirt as she walked away.
She opened The Ladder back up, frowning when she saw a sprig of violet between the pages. She glanced back up, scanning the diner in alarm. But all she saw were a few of the other regulars, none of whom were paying her any attention and the employees. Boyd and Scott were in the back. Erica was fiddling with the jukebox. Allison, who was wiping down the counter, looked up and winked at her again.
