Ratboy (my younger brother) managed to prank the entire PD today. Including my dad.
Drawing on the information dissemination properties of Facebook, he and his girlfriend posted on their pages that they were engaged. Like matches to the California foothills, it took off like wildfire.
My dad was getting emails and phone calls all day from people he works with, congratulating him on his new daughter-in-law, on his son's good fortune, and so on. My dad finally called him and Ratboy assured him that it wasn't true, just a rather detailed April Fool's gag, and no, he wasn't going to prank Mom too. It wasn't until the end of shift that Ratboy and girlfriend finally set everything right with the entire department.
Bonus: my dad gets home and tells my mother about it. She flips--not because of the joke (which she knew was a prank), but because, according to her, "people only joke about that stuff if they're close to actually announcing an engagement." So she was in a tizzy there for a little while.
Me, I can only say I'm impressed by the joke and hopeful that they'll actually get engaged sometime soon so that everyone involved will go micromanage someone else. Seriously, I'd love to have them start planning a wedding so that Mom can get fussy over something that isn't me going to grad school. So here's to you, Ratboy and the (hopefully) future Mrs. Ratboy: I don't think of it as gaining a sister, I think of it as losing a brother.
