           Nick had spent most of his adult life studying fossils and bones, trying to reconstruct appearance and behaviour from the tiniest details. It was enjoyable, but it was also immensely frustrating.

The anomalies changed all that. Now he could see, and touch. Now he didn’t have to guess any more.

Now he knew triceratops were herd animals, and iguanodons had tiger stripes.

Now he knew how a sabre-tooth went for the jugular. How raptors ripped at flesh with their huge claws.

How fragile humans really were.

Sometimes, Nick thought he liked them better when they were just fossils and bones.
