Most of the people at Captain Ryan’s funeral were soldiers. Standing unobtrusively at the back, Nick’s gaze was drawn to the few family members in attendance. Ryan’s father remained stiff and stoic throughout, his mother occasionally dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief.
Nick wondered what they had been told of Ryan’s death. If they knew that he was a hero who had died trying to protect civilians. Or whether they had simply received an automated letter containing phrases such as ‘classified’ and ‘in the line of duty’.
Whatever they had been told, Nick hoped they were proud of their son.
