Abby shifted uncomfortably, letting the words of the speeches wash over her. She flexed her fingers, missing Connor’s hand next to hers; the casual touch, the reassuring squeeze, the constant presence. That presence was gone, now.
There was so much she had never told him, but it all boiled down to one thing:
I’m sorry I never showed you how I really felt.
It was too late now.
Abby pasted a smile on her face when it came to her turn.
“Congratulations, Connor,” she whispered as she hugged him. “Look at you, married. Wow! I really hope you’re happy together.”

Connor cared for Ellie. He really did.
She was sweet, they got on well together, she was clearly mad about him, and she was into all the same things he was. They spent many a night discussing the finer details of Star Trek versus Babylon 5 until the small hours of the morning. They made each other happy.
Connor tried to ignore his doubts because everyone agreed that they were perfect for each other.
But as he hugged Abby on the day that he got married to another woman, Connor couldn’t prevent the unwanted thought:
