Connor wanted to be the hero, the action man, but frequently ended up feeling like he was actually the annoying sidekick who always got into trouble and needed to be rescued.
On this occasion it was Abby who had dragged him out of danger, Abby who was kicking the crap out of some ridiculously oversized amphibian. All Connor could do was cower behind her, cradling his broken arm and trying not to do anything even more embarrassingly unmanly like scream or faint.
He wanted to be the hero. But he had to admit, sometimes it was nice to feel protected.

Abby watched as Connor poked at his shiny new plaster cast.
She wanted to be annoyed with him for barging in and startling the creature when she had everything under control. But Abby knew he’d only done it because he thought she was in danger.
Until she met Connor, Abby had never known what it was like to have someone who would risk his life for her without a moment’s hesitation. Once she got beyond the rather scary fact of that being necessary in the first place, it was kind of comforting.
Besides, she’d do the same for him any day.
