Jess was particularly sparkly that day. Her dress was covered in sequins that glinted every time they caught the light. Her necklace was a delicate silver chain with a purple gemstone. Even her shoes were glittery.
None of that was a rival for the brightness of her smile, though. It was the usual Jess bouncy happiness magnified tenfold. And possibly on a chocolate related sugar high, some people speculated.
Lester was the first one to notice the real reason.
“Congratulations,” he murmured. “Captain Becker, I presume?”
Jess simply smiled, and unconsciously touched the shining diamond ring on her finger again.
