Becker was hogging the mirror when Stephen stepped out of the shower and ran a hand through his hair.
“Going for the spiky bed hair again?” Becker inquired with a chuckle.
“At least my hair style has some variety. There’s a theory going round that yours never actually moves at all from one day to the next.”
“There’s nothing wrong with being consistently neat.”
Stephen waited until Becker was done, and then pounced, running his hand through Becker’s perfectly styled hair, ruffling it thoroughly.
Becker retaliated with a handful of gel and a wicked grin.
They were late for work that morning.

Connor had come a long way from the untidy, immature boy that Nick had met all those months ago. Nick took pride in the fact that he had encouraged and mentored Connor through that development.
True, he was still far too eager to please, and still tended towards attention seeking.
And sometimes even Nick couldn’t fail to see the way Connor looked at him. The trust. The faith. The need.
He cared for Connor. He really did. But Nick had no idea how to respond to that look in Connor’s eyes.

He wondered if they knew that he didn’t give a shit what they thought. That he didn’t really care about his job. It was only a means to an end, to further his investigations.
In the dark of the night, Danny wondered if he would ever find his brother.

The first time he killed a man, he was terrified. He hadn’t meant to do it. Afterwards, he threw up, shaking and crying.
The second time, he did mean to do it. He told himself it was self-defence. The fear was still there, but his hands remained steady.
The third time, he did it because he could. Fear turned to adrenaline, and there was laughter in his eyes.
After so long being a victim, being powerless, barely scraping an existence, he had finally found something he was good at. Something that made him feel powerful.
Something that made him feel good.
