Ryan bit back a cry of pain as Becker pulled the bandage tight.

The street outside was fucking infested, and they were both almost out of ammo.

“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Becker said, wiping blood from his face.

Ryan nodded and used his radio.

“Professor? When we cause a distraction, you and your team run. No arguments.”

He glanced outside, memorising obstacles and cover.

“Ready to go down in a blaze of glory?” Becker’s expression was grim but determined.

“You can if you want. Me? I’m not planning to go down at all.”

They shared a momentary, adrenaline-fuelled grin.

Then they charged.

It wasn’t the first time Ryan had found himself smiling indulgently at Connor and making the mental comparison to a bedraggled, half-drowned puppy. It would have been amusing, if the young man hadn’t just nearly actually drowned, thanks to some creature.

“You okay?” Ryan asked, trying to sounds gruff and only professionally concerned.

Connor’s reply was muffled by the sound of his teeth chattering, and ended with a mournful whimper.

The next noise Connor made was a startled squeak when Ryan engulfed him in a hug that was messy and cold, and yet felt right in a way that he hadn’t expected.

The boy... Connor... had caught his eye immediately. So pretty. So young and fresh. He talked too much, but that could be beaten out of him sooner or later.

He only began to feel uneasy when the boy called him, ‘Tom’, talking to him like they were friends. Wittering about ‘alternate timelines’.

Ryan beat him until he whimpered and cried, until there was no more talk of alternate timelines. No more, ‘Tom’.

He tried to ignore an inexplicable shiver at the look in the boy’s dark, tear-filled eyes as he was made to kneel, and Ryan locked a collar around his throat.
