rob, this is maiki. from germany. i'm "friends" with your brother (duncan) who i got to know around christmas last year. i even had christmas dinner @your dad's house. you and me have met a couple of times, most likely @partys i think(after you got back from france). but we were probably both to drunk to remember anything in particular.
back to "borat". i think the movie definitely pointed out americas worst sides, so know everyone knows how crazy they are in reality, when they're not having thanks giving dinner. however, this is not that bad, because at least people know that they have thanksgiving dinner, because everyone kinda knows the basics(even if it's only cliches) about american life. but how many people are out there in the western world that have even basic knowledge about kasachstan/kazakstan? now people think that kazakstanians live in primitive villages, own broken cars+ horses and if they don't randomly rape people, they at least fuck their own, daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, whereby all of 'em are/ were prostitutes anyways. and their brain size equals a squirrel's one.
this is just my opinion, but i have to say, because there was some danger of the bavarians not understanding the movie, we only get the synchronized version which probabaly sucks even more.

;) ok. that was like the longest "comment" ever.

don't forget to say "hi" to duncan. cheers.

Hi, Maiki! Yes, I of course I remember you. It was great meeting you.
I'm not sure if it's a bad thing or not but Borat really just confirmed my stereotypes that I already had of Americans. Eg. That racist rodeo owner who wanted to kill all gay people, or whatever it was. I think a lot of people, at least in NZ, associate that sort of attitutude with that part of America.
Having said that, it isn't exactly fair to pick on, and perhaps perpetuate stereotypes for Kazakstan (the little guy), but I'm sure that almost all audiences would be aware that it was completely farcical... which, you're right, don't make it tasteful.
On the other hand, one could argue that it is funny BECAUSE it makes fun of sterotypes that already exist. Look at a huge amount of humour in the media... it's hugely based on stereotypes, or at least mocking other nationalities. But that depends on your own subjective opinion of what's funny.
These are my thoughts anyway. I hope all is going well in Germany. Peace.
