“Happy birthday,” he kissed the words into the skin of her forehead. It crinkled in amusement and incredulity.

“And how did you know that today is my birthday?” she asked as he took up his customary seat next to her bed.

“That, Madam President, is a state secret,” he deadpanned.

“You snuck a look at my medical records, didn’t you?” A hint of annoyance made its way into her voice. She was not ashamed of her age by any means, but her date of birth was a day that she had long ago stopped celebrating; not since her twenty-sixth year, the day that her mother had passed away.

“I may have,” he said quietly. An irresistibly boyish grin broke out across his face. She let out an exaggerated sigh and roll of her eyes to cover up the grin threatening to spill out; her man could be such a sentimental fool at times.

“Well then Admiral, where is my present?” she asked.

“Right here,” he answered.

“Hmmm,” she looked him up and down. “No ribbon?” she teased.

“It’s what’s inside that counts,” he said, his voice deepening to an almost growl.

“Indeed Admiral, indeed,” she purred, eyes twinkling.
