I just got back after 4 days away and had to deal with the morass of email, feeds, todo items and Tweets that had built up in my absence and it occurred to me that the way I deal with these datum is very much like how various Garbage Collection schemes work:

It's been a constant bug bear that Mariachi was so slow with large number of files because of its refusal to split stuff up into months.

The two reasons it's so slow is that firstly everytime you add a new index page each index page has to be regenerated to accomodate the new pager.

I really hate the Class method design of Email::Store - something that just doesn't make sense to me but which I inherited nonetheless.

If I ever get the time I'm pondering rewriting it as object method because, it sort of makes sense to me - a store is an object and messages and threads etc etc are objects that can be retrieved from the store.

Yet another note to remind me to write about temporary communities. In short there's advantages and disadvantages to Usenet, Mailing Lists, big ass Cc lists and yes, even blogs. Although I think they don't add enough value for the problems they cause.

But in the end they all do the same thing which is allow conversations to take place.

Mariachi has scaling issues caused by the fact that it doesn't arbitarily break stuff up over month boundries because, well, threads don't stop just because it's the end of the month. That plus threading meant that it slowed to a crawl around the $n thousand messages mark, even when adding messages incrementally. This is sub-optimal.

Apparently Email::Store doesn't work under Postgres - there are various issues, some trivial some serious. The most pressing, I think, is that Postgres doesn't cope with the CREATE TABLE UNLESS EXIST syntax which, I suppose isn't the most difficult thing to catch in the world - either check in advance or catch the exception. In a desperate push to try and get Buscador out I spent the last week battling various weird Email::* related bugs. That plus some stuff at work is what led to this.

Using the fantastic Devel::RichardC I got various things fixed, released new versions of Email::Store, Email::Store::Thread and Email::Store::Summary and released a new module called ( Read more... )

I did however start playing around with Buscador again.

It's mostly all fixed except for one weird bug to do with Email::Store::Thread and Mail::Thread. And some weird install bugs with Email::Store. This has led to Yak Shaving on ...

Prompted by talking to him at the LPW I added a feature to Email::Folder::Mbox to allow Casey to write Email::Delete. Which was nice.

I also rewrote Email::FolderType to use Module::Pluggable which is how I wanted to really do it in the first place. It's much saner now.
