The Alanis concert last night was more rockin’ and attention grabbing than I had thought it would be. I give it 3 ½ stars.
It was kind of like an episode of Storytellers on VH1 cause you got to hear her describing and talking about the meanings of the songs and that was kind of intriguing because that’s not usually something you get to hear very often.
If you can picture this, try to imagine Alanis with a Betty Page haircut, wavy black hair with short punk-esque bangs in the front, and then add platinum blonde highlights on the underside of her hair in the back. It was shocking to say the least. But then again I understand experimentation. You can’t stay with the same haircut forever.
I feel her vocals were better last night than they usually are because she was singing while standing still or chilling on a couch instead of manically running all over the stage like she normally does in her electric concerts. Her vocals were on the money last night and then some. Sometimes when she’s doing her diva modulations, though, I get the distinct feeling that she’s yodeling. Maybe her and Jewel should have a yodeling competition someday.
And it may be the fact that she was talking more than usual, or it may be the fact that I have recently been to Canada, but for whatever reason I felt like her Canadian accent was a little on the thick side last night. Even though I know she’s been converted and she’s an official American now, she is still going to have that accent forever.
The set-list consisted of every song off Jagged Little Pill since this was the tour to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the album. Other than that she only played one song or so off of each of her other three studio albums, that being “Flinch” and "Hands Clean" off Under Rug Swept, “8 easy steps” off So Called Chaos and “Thank you” off Infatuation Junkie.
Now, I mean this in the best way, but when the audience applauded her she kept saying, “Thank you, you’ve been so gracious!” with a fake smile as if it were a line she’d rehearsed in her most recent acting lessons. That was one of the only things I felt tainted the show a little. She played God in Dogma and she had her small role in De-Lovely but sometimes I think that singers just were not meant to be actresses (yes, Beyonce included). Some part of her didn’t seem as real this time around. Like the concert was too structured and it didn’t feel like it was organic enough.
But all in all I totally enjoyed myself. Jess and I snuck up about 30 seats closer than where we were supposed to be sitting and I got to hear an excellent performance of “Hands Clean” so having that alone is something worthy of my ticket price.
