Ray! I have a request. It is merely a small cultural item, but I would like something to remind me of... home. Could I have some Dwarf bread? I would ask if I could make some, but it is not the sort of thing cooked in a conventional oven, so I presume you'd have to ask for some ( Read more... )

warden permission? what's that?, trust the humans..., rhetorical questions as standard, ardent doesn't always shout, in-house dealings, discord spreads like butter, take your rule of law and shove it, sveta is far too bright

Yes, because I really trust the brigands, thieves and... serial, psychotic, murderers to defend me. They'll care.

Neither do I. But there has to be some inmate you can trust, some inmate you can come to an agreement with.

As you probably prove, not all of us fit in any of those catagories. I don't.

Besides, you'd be surprised what brigands, theives and murderers will do when it comes to self-preservation. If it's for mutual benefit...

If it's for mutual benefit, they'll benefit and then forget when it's their turn to benefit you.

I'd sooner trust Adric and the Doctors. At least I know what they think.

Then you are entitled to do whatever you want to them. If they breached the agreement, they deserve everything they get.

Trusting Adric and the Doctors is not quite the same as trusting the wardens. If someone made one of them an inmate, you'd still trust them, right?

So why not find an inmate, someone who understands the situation you're in, who knows just what it's like to be an inmate, who shares your suffering and imprisonment to trust? Because the Doctor and Adric's loyalties are more likely with the other wardens than with you.

Ok, what is 'Dwarf bread' and I'll see if I can work it out. And no rat. Have chicken.

It requires a forge to be made. Human ovens cannot reach a high enough temperature.

I didn't expect any request for rat to be met.

charmedandperky October 10 2010, 13:51:24 UTC
Ok, so what temperature do these forges go up to? And what is it, exactly?

You're not the first to ask. By that I mean you're the second, so don't get excited.

900 to 1,300 degrees. Thereabouts. Dwarf bread has all sorts of contents, but usually quite a bit of rock itself. I won't trouble you with the details, I'm sure my warden will get me some.

...there's no other Dwarfs here. I didn't realise humans ate rat.

[He's chilling in the library, because libraries make for good places to chill. Or to DEFEND BOOKS WITH A VENGEANCE. He prefers chilling.]

They've been handed a position that assures them they're right. We're dead, and they're right.

Wrong.

Are you suggesting a police force?

We don't need to give them affirmation of that fact by deferring to their judgment, though.

Not a police force, please, no. But... a little mutual cooperation. And breaking off any cooperation with the wardens.

A brotherhood.

Don't overlook the power of cooperation. Unless your only goal is to maintain order.

An agreement, yes, something like that.

I'm not overlooking it. But if whilst we're reliant on wardens, we can't do much with that cooperation.

Cultural item, huh? Bet you're wishing now you hadn't given me all those books to read. Sorry, no Dwarf bread. What d'you want it for anyhow?

Oh, and the lights, they're electrical lights. Safer than candles. Also, brighter. I dunno, maybe I can ask the Admiral if he could dim them down some in the corridor on your level. Don't think he's gonna turn them down generally, though.

It is a cultural item. I want it because I want something to remind me of home. I have no intention of using it. [Lies. Lies.]

A lot brighter. I imagine he wouldn't. I imagine he's catering to humans.

Sorry, it's still a no. 's like the axe, couldn't give you that, either. Even if I trust you not to use it as a weapon, it still is one. Anyone might get their hands on it. Is there anything else you'd like? Like, some sorta cultural item that maybe isn't also a weapon? [. . . pause, because he's reeeally not sure about this, but hey. He turned down the Dwarf bread request; maybe he needs to overlook the fact that he thinks eating rodents is utterly disgusting.] I could get you some rats, if you like.

I imagine he's catering to the vast majority on this boat. You got a pitch-black room, don't you?

...I want a weapon for a good reason. Those books are completely undefended. I can't do a thing except ask people to stop, and humans don't understand words like Dwarfs do. They expect me to make them.

There are inmates here who accept the 'rule' of the wardens?

Have they no self-respect?

private deepdowndark October 10 2010, 16:29:03 UTC
When you have to rely on them for everything? We don't have much self-respect left.

Unless we take it back.

Re: private deepdowndark October 10 2010, 16:56:59 UTC
I'm saying we reduce the amount of things we're reliant upon them for. Starting with punishment for crime and protection. Because they can hardly be held accountable by us when it doesn't happen.

We can hold each other to account. And think about it. When you feel threatened, who do you go to? Your warden? Or a friend of yours, someone you trust? When you want a wrong against you righted, do you go to your warden and beg for action, or do you take matters to your own hands?
