I are not ded!
Fall
The leaves of the tomato plants in big pots out on the balcony are turning yellow. I got 'maters and basil and chives and dill and thyme all summer long from the window box planters along the rail, and I'll miss all that fresh greenness when it's gone. The boston fern hanging from the roof is sneering at the annuals as they fade, knowing it's got a spot reserved inside for the winter. Not too much longer and the cafe chairs and tiny table out there will be covered in snow, the branches of the lonely, scruffy-tough, urban sidewalk-tree out front stark against a hazy snow-sky. And I'll be behind the porch door with a mug of cocoa and my grungy foo-foo slippers looking out instead of leaned-back/feetup on the railing people-watching the street below with a cold beer.
The Dayjob
I've gotten a new gig at one of the biotechs here. If you're familiar with Cambridge you know which one I'm talking about. ^^ I'll be working with a team of 8 - 10 people to redo the research & development arm's webpresence from the ground up. 9 month contract with an option to extend-- so that means 9 more months of not having to choose between the mortgage and comics, another reprieve! Private industry will be a welcome change from the uni environment. Best and the brightest down there in pharm land along the Charles River.
Electronic Death From Above
Last week the macintosh freaked out and slipped into a coma, the display went out on the Trio and the router died. And the wacom tablet's been acting up. We fixed the Mac, bought a new router, shuffled the phones around and I gave the wacom a good talking to. Best I can figure something around here emitted a low level EMP pulse. :D Another benefit from living so close to MIT!
I got a new phone. It's a violent pink chrome RAZR. OniKimono pink, #e91079. The same color my tattoo's gonna be when I finally get around to it.
DMCN #3
The deadline for DMCN #3 approaches. Crush time is underway and for the 3rd year I'm immersed in someone else's creation to the point where the world narrows down to something that's mostly insanity and willpower. I'm going to miss it next year around this time.
Go Outside and Play
In October I'm off to Anaheim for a week of Guitar Hero and shaved ice with Myung. We intend to mojito our way up the coast to San Fran for a few days of walking the streets of that beautiful city. Also drop in on YaoiCon and hook up with an old high school buddy for some nature-time-- crunching along the cold pacific beaches looking for smooth green pebbles.
Some Other World
I'm having a manga deciphered by a very talented translator. This is the first manga I ever encountered, found deep in the bottom of a dusty bin in a 2nd-hand shop in metro rocksonville, armpit of the south. One of those bookshops with narrow isles and boxes of books stacked in piles on the floor, overflowing the shelves, looming over the narrow path between shelves. The muted light and the smell of books everywhere, and there, buried under cheap sci-fi and covered in dust ,that strange shiny gem-- something I'd never seen before - which flipped a switch in my brain and made me decide to be an artist when I grew up. Being able to read it is just a bit magical, pardon my mushiness.
*looks at the clock* Er, goodbye Sunday morning. I'm going to wish I had you back before the 28th, I'm sure!
