Earlier this week, I googled "how to reuse a jack-o-lantern." I was curious to see what crazy things people had come up with.
Surprisingly, there was only one suggestion, but it was satisfyingly crazy. WikiHow suggested melting a few leftover Halloween chocolate bars in the microwave and smearing it on a moldy jack-o-lantern to create your very own ant farm. Yes, an ant farm! Because I want to invite them into my home as cold weather approaches.
Besides, I read a story in one of those Scary Stories for Sleepovers books about a boy who received an ant farm for his birthday. He thought it was dumb and boring so he started torturing the ants by pouring various substances into the farm to see how they reacted (you could tell the author had experimented as a boy himself). The next morning he woke up covered in ants who killed him.
Yeah, yeah, a kid story, I know, but I was a kid too. And I'd stomped on plenty of big red anthills in the front and backyards before too many people with their manicured lawn products moved into the neighborhood and drove them away.
I think I'll just pitch the jack-o-lanterns between a couple trees if I can find a couple that aren't too close to someone's front door.
