jakelogan interviews me:
1. A lot of artists are influenced by others in their field of work. As a writer, are there any authors/writers who influence you?
While there are undoubtedly writers whose work directly impacts how I write, I tend to notice more those who kick-start my muse, or whom I aspire to write as well as. There are the very famous authors like
Isaac Asimov (Sci-Fi),
Stephen King (Horror/Thriller/Sci-Fi),
Zenna Henderson (Sci-Fi),
Jeff Noon (Cyber Sci-Fi),
Patricia Cornwell (Mystery),
P.G. Wodehouse (Humour) ... and then there are the authors whom I know personally (whether face to face of on internet and phone) -
Yvonne Eve Walus - for her amazing poetry and erotica,
Frank Fradella - for his wonderful Absent Lover series, his incredible poems, and never-ending ideas of brilliance,
Jade Walker - for her musings, her poetry, her stories,
Tony Chad - for his poetry,
Joel Hayward - for his short stories, novels, poems and personal support.
I also turn to
David Mack's
Kabuki series when I want inspiration and beauty. If you've never read his graphic novels, I highly recommend them.
2. Have you ever been in a same sex relationship?
Yes. My first was this time last year, and while as a relationship it only lasted a few months, Lather and I have remained good friends (in fact, a group of us went to dinner to celebrate her handing in her thesis on Friday night).
3. Have you ever done anything you seriously regret?
I try not to have regrets ... that said, there are things I wouldn't mind changing! However, good has eventually come out of all of it, so I don't know that I would.
I regret not being there more for my Mum. I regret never getting to know my Dad on an adult-to-adult basis. I regret playing a part in alienating a girl at primary school.
4. Best movie for whatever reason (will accept multiple answers) and favourite actor/s/actress/es?
My favourite films are
The Princess Bride,
Pulp Fiction, and
The Last Seduction. Add to them the rotating others of Pump Up the Volume, Dangerous Liaisons, Kill Bill Vol 1, The Matrix, Thelma and Louise, Monsters Inc., Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Being John Malkovich, and random others ... I'm happy to say that I finally own all my favourites (except for very recent releases) on video.
As for actors and actresses - I like it when I forget that it's an actor. Tom Cruise will always be Tom Cruise, but Malkovich can make you forget. So can Christian Slater, Cameron Diaz when she tries, Carrie-Ann Moss, Val Kilmer. And of course I have adoration for much of the Buffy cast -
Nicholas Brendan,
Juliet Landau, and
Anthony Stewart Head in particular (and James Marsters simply for being James Marsters. Yum)
5. As a child growing up, what did you want your job to be? What do you think of your current job? (Me? I wanted to be an archaeologist or a scientist. Then I found out I hate science ^^)
I've always wanted to be a writer. It wasn't until I was slightly older that I made it a goal for payment, though. I don't remember wanting to be anything else, although I'm sure I thought about it!
I like admin, although it's not always the most exciting job. But unexpected challenges do pop up, and I take great pleasure in doing my tasks well. The perfectionist in me gets satisfaction.
