I'm Seriously Not Cool Enough

So First College visit with my young man.  Today was a open house at the MD Institue College of Art aka MICA.  The ex fixated mildly on MICA as soon as the young man expressed an interest in Animation as his future.  It meets the critieria of a) having an animation program and b) being local.  They drove up randomly one weekend and looked around, the YM saw a poster for "Wreck-it Ralph" and decided that was his kind of place.

Then the ex found on their web-site that they were having an Open House so he signed us up and the three of us headed up to check it out.  Between having 3 clubs he likes (animation, anime and 'The Guild' aka gaming) , the afforementioned movie and the urban gaming club having a nerf gun war this week (sounds fun actually), this is now the school to beat.

I felt like neither the YM or I are cool enough for this school (and we won't even discuss the ex who asked about landlines in the dorm rooms).  I saw more boots, scarves and hair colors not found in nature than I have ever seen in one place in my life.  The YM might get close if he ever trades his sweats for something else, since he's got that beatnick look going with the mock turtlenecks.  However me in my mom jeans and sweater and 10 year old purple Lands End coat that everyone thinks is a statement about the Ravens ... seriously not cool enough.

We discovered that there's still time to sign up for the summer program but oops you need 6 to 10 portfolio pieces for consideration.  Uhm yeah we could probably come up with 1 piece, though I have tons of elementary school art.  This art school thing is way out of my experience and oh boy the YM needs to start making some portfolio worthy art instead of doodling pokemon in his free time.  Sigh I guess we should have gone for something more respectable than the manga drawing class this spring.

So now I have to convince him to a) study the drivers book (class starts soon) b) study for the SAT and c) start building a portfolio because art schools care more about that than your application and essay.  It's gonna be busy around here for a while.
